VW Polo - A Curious Incident - Pseudo Noob

I was parking my car in an undisclosed inner-city car-park the other day with the radio on fairly high; ah, credibility down the drain already! As I was jamming out to my favourite R.E.M. song I realised the space I was attempting to drive into was far too narrow. I promptly reversed out of the space and into another.

The inner-city in question was not my home-town, I live a good 100 miles away, so after the visit I promptly drove home. A day passed... I then went to start up my car, for the first time since the trip, to find that there was a series of small scratches on the left passenger side. I rang the police, despite 24 hours having elapsed; instantly thinking that it was my fault and due to my unsuccessful parking manoeuvre. They now have my details as obviously I was unable to leave any notice or details being blissfully unaware of the situation myself. I have now also contacted my insurers - QUINN.

The police stated that they would pass the details on if anybody happened to get in touch with them regarding a scuff on Saturday; I feel this is highly unlikely but I needed to clear myself morally!

Have I done the right thing?
