Vauxhall Zafira - New Zafira 1.9 Auto - do you recommend it? - wazza

I am looking into getting a new Vauxhall Zafira 1.9 diesel (120bhp) automatic.

What are your views?

I know it is heavy on fuel compared to manual version but just fancy an automatic and this is within my price range.

Thanks in advance for any replies

I'd have no hesitation recommending a Zafira, having had ours now for 3.5 trouble free years (2.2 direct auto), but the 1.9 diesel auto? Hmmm..

Check the fuel economy and emissions figures, the 1.9 cdti is not a lot better than the 2.2 petrol auto and the purchase price is significantly higher.

Factor in slighty higher fuel price for diesel and significantly higher risk of more expensive repairs, and suddenly the 2.2 direct could be a very good choice. The old 4 speed auto in the 2.2 is practically indestructible too, whereas the 6 speed autobox in the diesel can give niggly problems.

(n.b. just noted that you want the 120bhp diesel, which is much the same price as the 2.2 petrol, whereas the 150bhp diesel is loads more but even so...)

Thanks for the replies. All points noted.

Been for a drive in a zafira 120bhp automatic. It was nice but not as responsive as i hoped. Kept an eye on the fuel consumption around town and dual carriageway, it was in the high 20s low 30s.

As it has been said elsewhere the car is a gear lower than you would have in a manual box while accelerating but when you ease off the accelerator it goes up a gear.

I feel it may be best to assume i would get the same fuel consumption figures as a manual petrol car.
