Stuck behind retail HGVs - pullgees

They seem to drive slower than other HGVs and to get stuck behind one on an A road is just what you don't need if you're running late. Tesco seems the slowest but that maybe just my experience . So are they governed more strictly by their companies or tachos or something, or are they worried about breaking the eggs?

The HGVs you describe are limited to 40 mph on single carriageway roads. That is their speed limit. By law. If THEY are running late, they are still not allowed to travel at more than 40 mph. If, in the past, you have seen such a vehicle travelling faster than 40 mph on a single carriageway road, then it was being driven at illegally high speeds.

All this is in the Highway Code.

That's absolutely correct, but the a lot of lorries are now fitted with Trackers and this enables the Traffic Office to see the speed they are doing at any time, even retrospectively.

They can, and will be disciplined for breaking that 40MPH limit.

That's what it'll be, those damn trackers. They actually cause the drivers to go under the limit to minimized the risk of crossing over it.. When ever there is a whole line of cars trailing along the reason is usually a retail HGV or a farm vehicle.

So what. I think its a good thing. If you're in that much of a hurry, get a MC.

in this area we call it traffic. It happens. Answer to running late is to start earlier, surely.

Not so sure about the advice of getting a motor cycle, overtaking very large wagons on single carriage roads is fraught with danger.

I would rather arrive a bit late than have the road closed for hours due to an accident.

Most speed limits are maximums, by the way.

Talking about long vehicles reminds me of Peter Crouch and his liason with Monica Mint, I wonder if somebody put her up to it :)

I have no issue with vehicles that can weigh over 40 tonnes driving at 40MPH on single carriageways, The amount of kinetic energy that they possess is incredibly high and you really don't want one to lose control at 56MPH (max speed).

Also, when they travel at 40MPH, they are considerably easier to overtake than when travelling faster.

Also, please don't forget that these vehicles are also large adverts for the companies that they have written on the side. Tesco/Sainsbury's etc don't really want to creat an image of poor or illegal driving.

So I suppose you don't mind being stuck behind slow moving traffic.

I'm simply stating a common driving situation which you're not bothered about.

You obviously replied to show what a perfect driver you are. This sort of thread always gets a few self righteous replies and of course you never run late do you? And besides I just mentioned late as an example. Being stuck behind a slow moving vehicle is annoying regardless of a time situation. I was simply querying why it seems to be predominately retail HGVs that crawl along someone mentioned trackers and now I know.

As an aside, anything that causes excessive speedo gazing must be dangerous, this includes trackers.

If those same HGV's were travelling at 55 mph this would be a thread from someone complaining about speeding, doesn't matter what you do people will find something to complain about.

No speedo watching needed, nearly every truck has cruise control and all modern trucks have calibrated speedometers.

Just like to point out here that i don't travel at 40 mph i tend to run at a genuine 50ish, travelling at 40 causes the sort of frustration expressed by the OP, understandable too i drive a car when not at work.

40 mph driving does result in drivers overtaking in unsafe conditions, travel at 50 and a car will likely be showing 54 or 55 mph on their speedo, some still overtake but it tends to be the competent ones, better for all IMO though not right according to the law.
