Hi this maybe a silly question but i'll ask it anyway.

I have Golf and the radio diesn't have LW on it at all even if you tune down on MW. If I get a new radio which has LW on it will it work or isnt it as simple as that?

Thanks

A good quality aftermarket radio will fit without problems with a suitable power adaptor lead. However ,the standard fit aerial system is not very good for LW reception so it may need to be upgraded.hth

Be very careful when fitting an after market Radio/C.D. to a V.W.
It can cause all sorts of electrical problems else-where on the car, including poor running.
Do a search - Its very common !

What a load of rubbish you can fit any number of single din radios nearly all popular brands have LW ie sony, jvc, kenwood, alpine, becker, blaupunkt etc

'"Hello there i have recently swaped my standard Vw beta radio for a JVC cd head unit/shuffle deck. arter pluging wires into new radio(VW wires fit straight in) on trying to start car a click was heard from the fuse box area. On inspection a 25 amp fuse was blown withb the picture of an engine with lightening through it. I changed fuse and now car wont start. Plugged in to code meter by a mechanic which showed no faults. Car still wont start".

Please Please Please any one any ideas please get in touch asap..

That is rubbish! I'm glad your not my auto-electrician. You can fit any aftermarket radio you like into a Mk4 golf. Yes, you may need an adapter for the aerial, and you may need to run a seperate 12v ign feed (due to the CANBUS switching the radio on/off for the OEM unit) etc but its totally possible and when done correctly will cause no ill effects.

( VW wires fit straight in) - this is the crux of people's problem, just because the connectors fit together doesnt mean the pinouts are correct. Issues occur when ill-informed people just plug them together without checking the wiring diagram/ pinouts . This often ends in voltage being applied to the K-line and causing problems.

I am glad some one has explained to this person the facts ,I am glad he does not come near my car he is not an auto electrician or an ICE installer whoever he is.Even a numpty installer should know to check the wiring first.

Andy,

I dont fit them wrongly, but I've made a fair few quid sorting them out and getting their cars to start afterwards !

Gordon,

of course there are no problems if they are fitted correctly, but this forum has its fair share of 'Bodgers' who come on here looking for free fixes.

Why the insults ?

Andy,

Do a search, there are loads of these problems ! Almost all the work of DIY folk with no electrical experience

Again why the insults ?

Mick.

Not an insult you come on the forum complaining about VW golf replacement radios when in fact any problem you have had is a result of a bodged job by you or your installer nothing to do with VW's .There is absolutely no problem fitting an aftermarket radio to VW's but like everything in this life there is a correct way and a wrong way.

Andy, we are not talking about 'Golf replacement radio's' We are talking about 'Replacement radio's' And thats where the trouble can and does start.

I've never had a problem fitting them, but I've sorted loads of badly fitted ones. I'm trying to help here.

Your agenda seems a little different !

You seem to know - You sort the lad out.

(Finished with this one).

Regards - Mick.

Can we keep it polite please.

The original poster is new to the forum (welcome!) and asks a perfectly reasonable question (particularly so if it's because he wants to listen to test matches). We may disagree with each other on this topic but we won't help Eddo75 by trading insults.

Eddo - your best bet is probably to look up specialist car radio dealers for your area in Yellow Pages or on Google and ask for advice. The difficulty is that more and more modern cars have audio systems designed for particular cars, so that nothing else will fit except the range of systems fitted to models in that range of cars, here the Golf. It's possible that you may be unlucky if no VW radio has LW: I've had four VAG cars since 2001 and none of them have had LW.

That said, elekieanda/cdoctor (post above) is clearly a professional and always gives sound advice. Elekie, if you see this, do you know if the system in a Mark IV Golf is unique to the Golf or whether an aftermarket set will fit?
