Has anyone chosen, and disregarded, a car simply on the number of queries in this forum and problems with them. There seems to me to be certain cars that bring out many owners with similar problems and complaints. No names no pack drill.

Listening to the good folks on here, I would know to never buy Italian, avoid high mileage, only consider cars with a solid service history, and certainly never ever buy a common rail diesel.

Of course, I knew none of this when I bought a common rail diesel powered FIAT with 200,000 on the clock and no hint of service records a few years and 100,000km ago! The reality is that it's been one of the most reliable cars I've ever owned... despite the fact that on paper it has no right to be!

Some cars run for ever even if they are not that well looked after. Its like people some smoke drink and do other things in excess and live to a ripe old age.Others run and keep fit jogging everyday eat the right food and keel over with a heart attack.Find out yourself and learn from experience.

It's not just the cars, IMO. People with some mechanical sympathy and/or nous usually look after their cars better - they and people with no knowledge but a good garage...

I was about to buy a Vauxhall Astra 1.7 DTI Esate diesel (60MPG) then found out from this forum that the engine seizes at high milege. I had not idea. So I didnt go ahead with purchase.

Lots of good advice on here from honest people.

I don't think anybody on here is dishonest, which is one of the reasons I come here.

But the real problem that affects all web sites is that there is a lack of statistically significant information about the frequency with which problems occur. There are stories on here about e.g... I could post that the engine undertray on my 54 C-Max had come adrift at the back*. But is that a pretty-much unique to my car, or a common problem of all C-Max TDCis, Focuses, Fords? It may say more about my driving and the speed cushions at the office park where I work. But we simply don't know because it's one of many hundreds of thousands of vehicles, so to make a big deal of it is akin to medical scandals such as MMR, where the statistical evidence did not support the claims of a few people armed with compelling anecdotes.

Even if you have statistically significant numbers of vehicles/owners to ask, what you ask and how also affects the answers you get. Lies, damn lies & statistics!

*As an aside, would just like to say this was fixed for free by Forest Gate Ford of Corby despite the car being about 3 years and 35k beyond warranty, which probably exceeds the expectations that most people here have of Ford dealers (myself included).
