Hello,

A friend just drained the oil from my car and put the new filter in. However he forgot to fill up with new oil and started the car.

The car was left for a couple of minutes running and a small amount of white smoke came out the engine. The car got turned off immediately after that - he realised he had forgot to top up with oil.

He then topped up with oil and left the car for an hour and half before trying to start the car. Unfortunately when you start the car it does not turn over and seems to have seized.

My question is, is there any way to sort this out without having to replace the engine?

Thanks

If the engine hasn't been reved hard or worked, you may get away with a new set of main and big end bearing shells. Nothing else should have been badly damaged.

If there was only shell damage it would more than likely still turn over its probably welded the crankshaft to the conrods along with rings to the bores.

If it was only left running at tickover it shouldn't have seized but if it was revved it likely will have done, the white smoke was likely a bearing failing. Takt the sump off and check the big ends and main bearings.
