Was I the only one to hear him today?

A remarkably restrained interview on both sides. How about asking the local authorities for the individual accident data to prove the need for the speed cameras (not all 6000) especially the one HJ complained about. Anyone done that and how?

Not quire alone! I also caught the interview and thought 'our man' did a reasonable job given the time restrictions -kept his cool, didn't interrupt, made his point and was able to argue the case with clarity.

I was a bit taken aback by Gifford referring to people's "right" to drive. Nobody has a right to drive. it's a privilege and one that can be taken away if abused.

I've never been convinced that cameras make money, with the massive bureaucracy this country always seems to need to do anything I could never imagine a £60 or £80 fine returning a profit. If they were the cash cows some people claim wouldn't the government be encouraging more of them not withdrawing funding? After all they need every penny they can lay hands on.

I suspect this is closer to the truth:-

"the individual accident data"

It seems reasonable to assume that if it supported the case for cameras, we would hear a lot more about it!

I thought HJ came across well, in rather trying circumstances. I know if it were me, I'd either dry up or babble!

I think he argued his case well, especially since Justin Webb repeatedly only allowed him to put across a short answer before he was interrupted. I guess that is the news sound bite culture. One point is that there is no need to prove that the accidents were due to excessive speed, rather than say confusing road furniture, or lots of drunk people falling into the road. Interesting that we do not see more average speed cameras. Could that be because they do not generate so much revenue hence they work out too costly?

We don't see any traffic light enforcement, as suggested by HJ, in this country, AFAIK. Perhaps because they don't create any revenue?

Shame HJ didn't say (or get the chance to say) about the speed cameras sited using false statistics

e.g. suicide victims counted as RTA victims when run over after jumping off a bridge..or..one particularly bad accident that was going to happen somewhere anyway due to the continuous exceptionally poor driving (drink/drugs/speed etc) and the deaths caused skew the true stats, because the accident site was something akin to pinning the tail on a donkey.
