Citroen C3 Airdream+ 1.6 HDI - running in a diesel engine - wingsone

Hi

Am just about to take delivery of a nearly new citroen C3 Airdream+ with the 1.6HDI engine and was wondering if the advice given by HJ on the 31st Mar 2002 still relevant today as regards running in a new diesel engine.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Wingsone.

Just drive it as you would normally drive;nothing special required.

Don't take it round a race track though. Modern engines are very pricisely engineered so dont need the rough edges wearing off, they also develop much more power than they used to so normal throttle operation won't hurt them. It will loosen up as time goes by but that's just the final 'polishing'

Have got one of these on order for one of my staff. Looks lovely and i really like the zenith screen.

Modern diesels should be run in just by driving normally - running in the engine in the traditional way actually seems to work against it.

In the rebuild of the site a few weeks ago the 40 FAQs, which covered thing like how to run in an engine, parking tickets, how does the Reg No system work etc disappeared. Any chance of getting them back? They were very useful IMO

It's important to give it some work to do in the first hour or so of operation -- that doesn't mean thrashing it, but just give it maybe half throttle to accelerate briskly from 2,000rpm up to about 3,000rpm in 3rd gear and 4th gear a couple of times on the drive home if you can find a nice open road or dual carriageway.

This helps develop the piston rings' seal in the cylinder bores. If the engine is babied too much, the bore surface can 'glaze' and the piston rings will not seal properly, meaning the engine will burn oil and will not deliver optimum performance.

Enjoy it!
