Nissan Micra K11 - Engine management light: main dealer only? - mikem004

98k
Engine management light has come on. Its a white engine icon.
Oil, water and engine temp are OK.
Car starts and drives OK.
Is this potentially serious?

I suppose I will need to read the ECU code somehow. Is this a main dealer only job, or will a backstreet garage be able to do this?
Given the age, mileage and bodywork of the car, I'm not keen on paying main dealer prices.

It may just be a gremlin.

Disconnect battery, 3 mins later reconnect.

EML will hopefully have gone away.

It may come back but it may not if it was just a gremlin.

Could be a lambda sensor or the cat failed.. Cheap aftermarket cats often fail - hence the question..

Wouldn't a failed cat result in rough running, or stalling or something?

Incidentally, the engine icon is white. All other warning icons on the dashboard (oil, handbrake, battery etc.) show up red when there is a problem.
