Further to the thread regarding the Hyundai ix35 delivery delays, the July figures for car sales in Spain are out today. Overall the market is down 24% for the month (end of sc***page plus 2% VAT increase), but sales of medium SUVs are up 12.4% and large ones 7.7%.

Could it be that the anti-SUV campaign a couple of years ago lead manufacturers to reduce manufacturing targets, and they've been caught on the hop now that the market is returning to normal?

Nope... just that the manufacturer's advertising blitz to try to get rid of the unsold ones has worked!

Still useless vehicles for the vast majority of people... except the American suckers...

Apparently it's not subsiding here .;)

Most newish MPVs seem to be compact ones like the Freelander, and most are diesel powered - so they're reasonably economical.

Vehicles like the old petrol V8 Range Rovers, with about 15 mpg, gave 4x4's the gas guzzler reputation but those are gradually being sc-r-apped or chopped down into specials for competitive 4x4 trials..

It seems anyway that the environmental movement has stopped worrying about the profligate consumption of oil and has a monomania bout CO2 emissions.

Another thing is that I never felt it was right to single out the 4x4 gas guzzlers for criticism when prestige luxury saloons and high-performance sports cars were just as thirsty and, if anything, more pointless than a 4x4.

NOTE TO MODERATORS: the word S C R A P or S C R A PPED are filtered on here - a bit difficult on a forum about cars!!

You mean nearly as useless as a Ferrari,Porsche,BMW M5,M3,Audi R8,Merc AMG's etc. or any thirsty performance car. Personally an SUV would be far more use for me and my family than any of the above.

I run a IX35 and my wife has a Nissan Qashi...Both bought as a replacement for 'normal' cars mainly due the terrible state of the roads in this country.

I had a Focus hire car last week and really noticed just how bad our A-Roads are.

On that basis alone I'd suggest that far from being useless, they're fast becoming a neccessity.

what, lots of boulders on the A303 are there?

Not sure if you have the 4wd version of ix35, but anyhow how does it compare against the nissan i.e, drive , quality etc?. karl.

I've got the 2WD (Premium in White, since you ask). I don't really see the need for 4WD where I live in the country (NW).....Now if I lived in Jockland, it might be a different story.

I'd say the build quality is about the same as the Nissan, nicer dash and exterior IMHO, and that extra 4" is very noticable. In fact it's slightly bigger all round, but it's especially noticable in the boot.... The IX35 is Massive !

But all those are specialised sports/performance cars... so no alternatives and not a fair comparison... For the majority of SUV owners (note the word majority) there are much more practical and better alternatives for their (and their familys') transport... SUVs are just a fashion accessory, and a particularly ugly one at that.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Although I don't own one, I find the look of most SUV's preferable to a lot of new cars, and far more practical. As for being a fashion accessory ,in your mind not in mine. Try getting through the mud and unmade road to my sisters house on Exmoor, without decent ground clearance and mud and snow tyres and your stuffed.

I think SUVs have a place in the world when being used for something like that which is perfectly reasonable. I'd guess The combination of Ferrari-Exmoor-snow wouldn't be a very happy one

The problem is the people who think you must have one to take the kids to school and can't get into Tesco car park without them

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder..

True, but I'd need some rose-tinted ones to consider most of them anything other than ugly... Perhaps I need to borrow some from the owners!

Re 4x4, there's plenty of capeable 4x4s which aren't SUVs!

I'll stick to the Fashion Accessory view for most owners!

Each to their own. I wouldn't have the temerity to tell people what they should or shouldn't drive. Its a personal choice. I couldn't care less whether my neighbours drove Ferrari's, Transit vans, SUV's,Kia picanto's or sherman tanks.(rubber tracks!)Its none of my business or anyone else's.

Anti-SUV hysteria subsiding - b308

I don't remember telling anyone they couldn't drive one... if they want to look a **** that's their choice, who am I to tell them not to! ;-)

I am never hysterical about anything. I just think that people who drive huge hulking big cars or vans - and who usually are on their own in the vehicle.. show their intelligence and good sense in subsidising the rest of us through their contribution to MH's Exchequer .. when they could buy a smaller vehicle and save loads of money..

:-)

As for the state of UK roads, apart from speed humps I have seen no 1 meter deep holes as they have in the US.. But of course I live north of Watford so am stupid...as most of those holes are South of Watford.. They must be judging by the number of large 4x4s in London.. where they have to battle through 2 metre snowdrifts in winter to commute to work...

On my journey to work when I am not dropping the kids off at nursery, I am the sole person in my seven seat MPV. Just because I am on my own doesn't mean that I dont' require the space at another time.I am sure this is the case for many drivers. Our work car park is full of them. Also most SUV's and vans are no bigger than my vehicle. If its a diesel SUV its probably less thirsty than mine, but I didn't buy my vehicle for its fuel consumption. After the recent winters and the poor roads in my area, if I had lots of cash I would certainly be looking at an SUV.

.Most of these SUV enthusiasts seem to live in a suburb of London called "Denial". When will they admit to us and themselves that these awful vehicles are ugly, uncomfortable, and thirsty? Not to mention their compromised dynamics.I cannot believe that anyone who enjoys driving would buy one.
