I'm about to buy another car, so my previous will sit on the drive until it gets sold.

The insurance will be transfered to my new car and the old one now uninsured.

For arguments sake I'm unable to sell the car for a while and I need to get it MOT'd. Am I covered to drive the car to a garage to get the MOT work done? If not can another person with insurance drive the car for me?

SFAIK you may drive an un-taxed car to an MOT testing station at which you have a date/time appointment for a test and (I guess) you can drive it back afterwards; not sure about the second half!

It can be un-taxed but it must be insured.Speak to your current insurance company-most will give you cover for both vehicles for a short period.

You can drive the car untaxed for a prebooked MOT but the vehicle must be insured for you to do so. You can buy short term insurance to cover these circumstances.

If another driver carries insurance which provides third party cover under their own policy then they can drive the car but remember this only covers damage to a third party - and if they are at fault it will not cover any damage for which they are at fault which they cause to your car.

There is no hard and fast rule, different insurance companies play by different rules. As well as age restrictions you may well find that any company that provides DOC cover (driving other cars) as part of its policy may well insist on.......

A) The vehicle in question being registered/owned by someone other than the person using it on DOC terms

B) The vehicle in question is covered by a valid policy in the name of someone other than the person using it on DOC terms.

I once found myself in a similar situation, being asked to move a friends car on which his own policy had expired. As the distance was considerable I considered it prudent to check with my own insurance provider that I would actually be covered. Despite having a legitimate fully comp policy in my own name and on my own car it turned out that I wouldnt have been covered for the second reason mentioned above.

When it comes to car insurance I would not assume anything without speaking to the provider first.

Sky insurance's policys' cover you on other peoples cars even if they have no policy, somehting i've found very useful the last few years.

But phone up and check to make sure you would be covered.
You won't be insured third party on your own car without taking out a new policy.

Are you sure its a bit of a risk for a insurance company,I insure a fiesta and drive somebody elses uninsured Jag and have an accident and they pay out without question.

I will have some of that goodbye to high insurance costs.

On the web site they make no mention of this nor in the conditions what they do offer is short term insurance for such as test drives but there is a charge. You can always get seven days free cover from such as Norwich Union subject to acceptance but an insurance company giveing insurance on unisured cars without any check I think not.
