Mine is quite modest. The oldest thing I have that is - and passed from my Grandfather, to my Father - then on to me around 6yrs ago.
it`s a well worn silver fobwatch chain - with the T bar at one end of the chain and a silver medallion about the same size as the old florin. Or two bob as we called it around here.
The watch that went with it was stolen years ago - kept separate in a little box for security they found that and not the chain.
I get it out and handle it every year or two and remember the robust Grandad who drove a brewery wagon and a team of four Dray Horses. The story goes that he once came out of the brewery yard so fast - to make it up the hill - that he caught a market stall, totally demolishing it - unable to stop.
He used to get a shout from a member of the public "whip behind" and he cracked his long horse whip back over the wagon - to lightly lash kids hanging off the back for a ride.
My father told me that a guy with a horsewhip used to stand outside the cinema - taking money from the crowd and then giving tiny kids a coin for holding a 2" stub of a ticket between their teeth. My father was one of them and just felt the air from the four horse whip - and a crack - the ticket whipped from his mouth.
You don`t seem to get that entertainment in a cinema queue any more...
Any passed down memories or heirloom stories you may wish to share?
