Peugeot 106 - 106 won't start - Battery or Alternator? - Marty L

My W reg 106 would not start this morning after so far a faultless ownership. It didnt respond well to a jump start but worked after a stern push and bump start. Since then it chases low revs and bounces between 1000 and 2500 at idle. During the drive into work the radio kept cutting out and the rev counter and speedo kept dropping to zero before performing normally. After parking at work 40 mins later the car would not start and is completely dead, somewhat scuppering a trip North which is now underway on the train. I would be grateful if anyone could tell me whether this is likely to be an alternator or a battery issue or something more sinister?

Could be either or could be a faulty connection. Check the voltage across the battery terminals, you should have about 12 volts, if you have but its still dead you have a connection problem, possibly the battery connections themselves or the earth lead to the engine.

If the battery is flat it could be the battery itself or the alternator, if you can get it running there should be about 14 volts across the battery if the alternator is OK.
