Rover 75 1.8T - Mystery coolant loss - Rapport35

Coolant disappears although garage can find no sign of leak when pressure tested, and no sign of oil in coolant or vice versa.Cooling fan does not appear to kick in even in recent very hot weather. Suggestions please.

How much are you loosing i.e. miles per 1/2 ltr and does your exhaust look normal in colour and deposits. Run the car until hot and turn it oss for 1/2 hr get someone to start it whilst you observe the tail pipe, is there steam comming out. Next test it to get the car upto temp at night and search the engine bay and rad with a torch as that highlights and steam which is very hard to see during the day. Regards Peter

The rubber O rings on the manifold, you are about to have 1.8 decease a blown head gasget.

I have just read this again, working mechanics who do not know where to look on a 1.8k series engine its probably the best reported problem of any engine ever.II would change your garage.

Thanks. You have confirmed my own suspicions. But why is cooling fan not kicking in?

Rover 75 1.8T - Mystery coolant loss - Collos25

It probably doesn.t work

The temperature sensor is probably dead or the wiring has melted. Or the connection is corroded. Or the motor has burned out.

It's a Rover. You don't expect durability , surely?

Thanks for reply.Fan does operate when Aircon on,but not if use car without.Excuse ignorance, but where is sender positioned? How can I test it in situ? Garage tell me there is an associated box of electronics which is probable culprit.Expensive,so looking for cheaper cause of non-working fan!

No idea of Rover layouts - sorry..

You really need a simple multimeter and some knowledge to sort out the problem....

If the cooling fan works with a/con on,then I would think that the fan circuit electronics are ok.It is controlled from the engine ecu .The engine coolant temp sensor may be at fault. It is a 2-pin device screwed into the thermostat housing. However if there is insufficient water in the cooling system, then the sensor will not read the water temp correctly and so not switch the fan in when high temp is reached.hth

I know what it feels like you hope for a simple answer but I think in this case its a strip down. The above mail is very accurate ,for future knowledge the main ecu sits under the wiper housing on the left hand side under the plastic trim in front of the windscreen these often fry due to the water drain getting blocked but in your case the odds are its the head gasget.I have had exactly the same problem on a 75 and a Freelander a friend in Bradford specialises in Rovers and he must do one a week once they are repaired properly they never go again and I repeat properly.

The other main problem on the 75 petrol is the fuel pump situated under the rear seat its in two parts and one of the parts has the habit of seperating there is a mod available for this or you can fit a PSA unit its worth doing as if it goes its a real messy problem to sort out, I suggest you search on the Rover 75 forums for further knowledge and help. And good luck.

Thanks to you all for help.It has put me in a much stronger position.

Showing the forum messages to garage had magical effect.Sender contacts were examined, diagnostic m/c coupled and cooling fan DID kick in at 102/103C. Saved unnecessary job,so inlet manifold O rings next!!
