Please help me with 4x4 query? - AndyL
Haven't posted here before but was hoping someone would be kind enough to help me out. The missus wants to bet rid of her current car (Mitsubishi GTO 3000 twin turbo) as we have moved to the country and the fuel consumption is a bit heavy now she is earning less. She wants to buy a 4x4 but the fuel/mpg figures are quite shocking talking to local people with Range/Land Rovers etc. Could anyone tell me what 4x4's give the best MPG?
Any websites anyone knows of would be very useful...cheers

Andy,
Read the HJ road test of the 2002 Honda CRV. Excellent MPG and a friend who bought one a few months ago is over the moon about the comfort and build quality.(He traded in a 4.L Disco for it)

Thank you for your reply. I forgot to mention the important point that we are looking at a second hand 4x4 and our budget is about £8000. Sorry for being such a numpty!

I dont think mpg is an issue with real 4WD drivers. It's only those being used only for off-road Tesco car park/school playgrounds where this comes into play - hence the CRV reference!

Stay well clear of anything from Solihull unless you like doing repairs. Buy Jap or do what I did and get a Jeep Cherokee 4 litre and gas-convert. Costs just under £2k with an underfloor tank and adds about £1k to the resale value. Then enjoy 4 litre petrol power and diesel fuel costs. I get 35-40mpg equivalent. Nice vehicles, a bit old-fashioned but non the worse for that. Bits not too bad if you avoid a dealer, go to one of the several specialists. I can give you a few contacts if you get one. Also DaimlerChrysler insurance was a bargain, £350 fully comp. with full no claims.

An alternative 4 x 4 would be something like either the daihatsu terios or the suzuki jimney (jimneys can be bought new for just 8 grand). An alternative solution would be to keep the mitsubishi and have it on limited mileage policy and buy a much cheaper 4 X 4 so you could have the benefit of something sporty when you wanted it. The most economical 4 x 4 would probably be the subaru justy which is somewhere between fiesta and focus sized and can be picked up from anything between 3 and 8 grand depending on how old a one you want.

Has the missus thought about this? She's driving round in a serious car which is (a) fast and (b) handles well. By comparison, a 4 x 4 (a) isn't and (b) doesn't. Could be a big shock!

"Could anyone tell me what 4x4's give the best MPG?"

Easy - the more car like, the better. Subaru, Volvo & Audi all make four wheel drive vehicles that drive better and are more frugal than the "shed on wheels" type.

They will handle anything that UK country roads & tracks will throw up.

If you need a "shed" because you intend to do really serious off roading - why worry about the mpg?
