A few weeks ago I was coming to the car in the morning and finding it dead, enough power to deactivate the alarm but only the drivers door would unlock using the key. I would put it on charge and it would be alright for a few days, when it would happen again. It started to happen increasingly often and, when it happened the morning after I had put the battery on charge, I assumed that the battery (the original one) was faulty.

So I had a new battery fitted about 2 weeks ago and all seemed well, until this morning. This morning the whole car was dead, alarm still active and LED flashing it's normal rhythym, the alarm would not deactivate from either fob. So I opened the driver's door, popped the bonnet and searched around in vain for somewhere to use the key under the bonnet to deactivate the alarm while it wailed away. What was odd this morning was that when I put the battery charger on it would not start charging (it's a Halfords one which doesn't provide power to the clips until it detects a circuit has been made). This was only a few hours after I had successfully opened and then locked the car using the fob.

Assuming the new battery is not defective, then it seems logical that there is an electrical fault somewhere. It's odd that the length of time between charging the battery and finding it dead seems to vary, sometime it's a week sometimes the next day. Could something in the electrical system be causing a problem seemingly at random in this way? Could an earthing problem cause something like this, I am fairly weak on electrics?

Anyone had a similar experience?

Thanks

Patrick

You need to see if the battery has a discharge current flow with everything swithched off ,there will be a tiny drain for the alarm circuit. If everything is ok then it may be worth having the battery checked it is not unknown to get a faulty one. If there is a drain then you need to find it.

I would agree. Disconnect one battery lead and connect a meter capable of reading about 5 amps between the lead and battery terminal, if you get a reading of much more than 100 m/a something is draining your battery, you should be able to find out what by removing the fuses one at a time. Don't turn anything on while doing this.

OK, thanks for the advice. I have got hold of a meter and will investigate later.

OK, my meter read 0.01 on the 10A setting; so there doesn't seem to be an excessive current draw.

I haven't tested the alternator 'cos I didn't have an assisstant earlier, will try that next. If that is OK, I guess it looks as though I got a duff battery as a replacement for a failed batter - what are the chances of that?

10 m/a is very little, check the voltage across the battery with the engine running, you should have about 14 volts, much less that that and you probably have a faulty alternator - unless the belt is slipping.

It looks like a bad earth to the chassis is causing the problem, I have 0v between the battery positive and the chassis with the engine running.

Alternator is fine, 14.3v between the battery terminals with the engine running.

I will clean and check all the battery connections later and have a look at the chassis connections.

Sounds like you have found the problem, the main earth lead is probably bolted to the engine.
