Which does the forum think will give me the longest trouble free run? Iv seen a 52 plate version of all 3 with 80,000ish on the clock. we dont do big miles a year and only a bit of motorway so your words of wisdon would help sway our choice.

The Avensis, out of those three, would give you more chance of having a trouble free run. As I'm sure you know, spending £2k on a car will never guarantee a long trouble free run.

If you're open to suggestions I'd look at a Honda Accord also.

I've had two Vectras, a MKII Mondeo and a MKIII Mondeo. I currently own a 2001 Accord (probably in your price range) out of all of those models the Accord is the most reliable and feels better put together than all the others.

As my ever faithful and trustworthy mechanic kept telling me, buy Japanese! :-)

Good luck in your search.

With this age and price of car, the way it has been treated will have more influence on its potential servicabllity than the brand, that said I would trust the Mondeo most as the Avensis of that age might have the faulty oil burning batch of engines - yes even the Japs get it wrong occasionaly - and GM electrics are, well, GM electrics.

RE the Accord, yes a cracking and reliable car, but don't overlook a Rover 620, it IS a Honda Accord but can be picked up for half the price. Just as reliable and well made but not as fashionable. The rest of the Rover range at the time is rubbish, the 620 was a peach.

The Mondeo is the most accomplaished car of its age. Check out pedal wear, many cars of this ages may have been used as private cabs. You should be able to find a one or two owner car and don't overlook other cars not listed above, i.e. Nissin Primera and Mazda 626/6.
