Like many others I have had endless flat battery problems with two Grand Voyagers. The current 2006 2.8 Diesel had one of the fancy Optima redtop gel batteries (40Ah and 815 cranking amps). Whilst these appear superior for certain roles (very hot, very cold or if you plan on rolling your LandRover) I believe they are unnecessary for general UK road use and have significant trouble charging. One Chrysler service manager even told me he felt the gel technology was immature and I should avoid them. They are also expensive - my local Chrysler garage wanted £326 for one although they can be had online for £190. Instead I bought a 096R spec battery which fits without any modification and can even be properly clamped down. Note the R in the spec which indicates terminals reversed from the more normal (I think) 096 battery. With the R version you will need no modification to the leads. You can get various 096R spec batteries in the 70-74Ah 640-720 cranking amp range. I ended up with one I did not choose but it seems to work well so far. It is a Banner Starting Bull rated at 72Ah and 640 cold amps (presumably cold cranking amps CCA?). I believe any of the 096R spec batteries will do and would ideally choose one towards the top end of the cranking amp spec. I paid £105 including fitting through a local garage but have seen these online down to £59.90 plus delivery. After two weeks of cold weather and 15mile school runs we are going strong.
