You`re standing in Halfords and there are choices within the specs that your Motor requires for it`s engine oil.

Halfords full synth - or Mobil 1............

BOGOF for own brand? Or 20% off Mobil 1 - if you hit Easter or August BH.. maybe.

Free umbrella - with Mobil 1 around the edge......

Your eyes glaze over and you remember it in 1967 - Duckhams Q20/50 - of the Mobil 1 of it`s day.

Went for Duckhams then - great name colour and SMELL.. Only the sound (in being different) was missing. One glug being much like another glug glug.

Great association with the Duchhams `name` though at the time. I wonder how much of the enthusiasts market would have been captured and held if the Duckhams brand name had a full synthetic all along and had challenged Mobil 1 - rather than seemingly dropping the ball and largely disappearing?

Mobil 1 or Halfords own?(I use Mobil but would prefer not to buy an American product)

Politics and engine oil - surely not? Probably refined in Europe anyway?

Charisma still hangs on the Duckhams name though, after all these decades - don`t you think?

Actually, I used to feel like that about Castrol too - but their advertising extinguished any technical interest I had in it, long ago.

Funny thing - names and associations.

I quite like the mystery EXTRALUB I can buy in French Supermarkets. No idea if it's any good but it's cheap as chips (this may be the connection). Can you do French Fries in their 5W40 Full Synthetic ?

And I also like MILLER'S because it always sounds strangely technical and amateur, but is, I believe excellent jollop.

Its all about branding though isn't it. As long as they are all made to the same spec, it shouldn't really matter what you stick in.

I remember being a lowly MDC servant about 25 years ago and the Duckhams Q, BP SuperViscostatic and MDC own brand was all delivered in a single drop by the same cheery BP delivery man.

I stand to be corrected on this, but I believe Halfords oil is a Comma product. Their semi-synth. stuff seems ok, I have used it for many years in both our cars. Mind you,it only spends 6k. or six months in their sumps. If oil is changed often, quality is less relevant anyway.

Valvoline does it for me. Never bought it, just a nostalgia thing for an old can of it my dad always kept. Was oil better when bought in square gallon tin cans - you could cut the side off with tinsnips and use it as a receptacle when draining old oil.

Negative connotations - Carlube.

Just saw Castrol`s latest `Cholesterol` ad in yesterdays paper. Same day that Statins are revealed as rotting your liver (or something)

Had a laugh at that. (the oil ad)

it doesn`t take much to amuse me, these days............

Halford's "own" brand is rebadged Castrol I believe - well it was when I was knocking around in the oil industry. Castrol oil is not fully synth, it's a kind of hybrid, they managed to get what they can call fully synth changed - I don't touch the stuff, motorcycle gearboxes are a good barometer of oil quality, Castrol or Halfords makes my bike's gearchange feel like stirring a box of spanners.

When the large American oil company I was working for lab tested the competitor's oil before embarking on their own fully synth project, there was nothing in it amongst the various brands - except for Mobil 1, which was streets ahead. It was the only oil to stay in grade after a few thousand miles; Despite unbeatable hot viscocity, the cold pour rate was astonishing - 10 degrees better than any other oil - that proves the quality of the "base" oil. Our oil after many millions of dollars investment was no better than the rest of the rabble (despite our claims!) we got nowhere near Mobil 1 either...

Asda are currently offering the full range of Mobil 1 oils at very good prices. I bought 3 X 5 litres of Mobil 1 esp 5w30 at £32 per jar, which will do 2 changes. (Halfords with 20% off are at £39.99)

Halfords own brand oil range seems quite pricey to me sometimes. They sometimes give away a free set of screwdrivers if you buy it, so I guess it isn't as keenly priced as you'd think.

It pays to shop around.

I recently got some Unipart 5w-30 Fully Synthetic oil from a Ford dealer for £15 for 5 litres, says it meets the Ford specification so it should be at least half-decent.

As volcane mentioned, Asda are doing Mobil 1 Fully synth in 5w30 and 0w40 for £32 for 5 litres which is good value. I believe Mobil 1 is a "proper" synthetic made from PAO or ester base stocks, am I right in syaing that?

Oil is oil is oil.

Give me the right grade and I'll be happy. I've taken three petrol cars over 200K now (all Japanese, all basic 10/40 semisynth), never had to take a spanner to the engine on any of them.

Don't believe in paying for a badge, no matter what it is.

I'd still use Duckhams 20/50 if I could. Lovely colour.

Terrific on sponge pudding .....

Duckhams was an astounding ahead of its time style-over-content product.

Take an average multigrade and dye it a peculiar colour to differentiate it from the herd – simples.

I wonder if the colour and smell similarities to fairy liquid are just coincidence! :-)

I`ve just noticed that Mobil 1 is now branded `New Life` on the label and there seems to be claims for extended life. But the API CF and ACEA B3 B4, specs seem the same. Still only `CF` for diesel - that`s really out of date now isn`t it?

Can`t see the difference, Can anyone else?

asda are doing cheap oil at the moment (6ltrs for a tenner) ...you would have to go to florida to get it any cheaper, courtesy of BP ... ;)

Motor Oil - names and brand attraction - oilrag

I have 3.5 litres left, so with that being used for the Autumn change - won`t need more until next Easter.

Too late for a scoop of the Florida coast now - BP have seemingly managed to turn it off and there is only old stuff left ;-)

Might be OK to brush on the subrames tho.................. instead of grease.

What spec/grade is that cheap Asda oil? Ta.

Motor Oil - names and brand attraction - zookeeper

Halfords oil was all at one point Castrol, simply because Burmah-Castrol owned them for a short while. I'm pretty sure they now multi-souce and some of it is Esso and the "good stuff" is Comma.
