Corsa 1.5 TD 1996 - Coulds of blue smoke - corsa15td

HI

Could anyone give me any advice, please?

I have a corsa 1.5 td on a p plate tht i have just replaced the engine on. When started, it runs rough, taking quite a while to start and emitting clouds of blue smoke. So much so cars passing the drive stop to see whats just blown up.

Is the engine screwed, i.e. worn piston rings, or can it be caused by any other means i can check before removing the engine again and returning it.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Does it pull OK once started and warm? how long does it have to run for the smoke to stop and run smoothly? Could be low compression due either to wear or incorrect valve clearances, the pump timing is out or the cold start electrics are not working.

Thank you for your reply.

So far i have not got the smoke to clear or run smoothly. have had it running with 2000-3000 revs for about 10 mins on numerous occasions but it has never cleared.

I have pulled the timing cover off again and confirmed timing holes line up on the top pully and the pump pulley. Does this mean it is in time or could the timing still be out.

Thanks

How would i check the pump timing aside from putting a bolt thru the timing hole?

Or is this the only way?

Thx

It could still be out on the crankshaft pulley, it should be on TDC when the other pulleys line up, I don't know how you do it on your particular car but on Citroens there is a hole in the back plate that you can insert a rod, when on tdc this should slide into the flywheel and lock it. Your symptoms certainly suggest that the timing is out.
