Porsche 924S - Simple, if you know the answer - paddles

My friend has a porsche 924S which will not start on the key. The engine turns, battery ok, it will start by pushing or towing. as such it is a useless car. The original suppliers, porsche main dealers, have no solution. The control box has been returned for checking twice without result, and finally, it will start if a 944 box is installed but wont run properly. I am sure it is simple, if you know the answer

It seems like it's losing power to ignition when turning on the starter. Could be the drop in battery voltage or an iffy connection.

What, if anything, was done to it immediately before this manifested itself?

Have you tried another battery or jump leads?

i agree, the problem is why. an iffy lead seems the cause but the engine does turn, where would the loss of juice to the ignition come from.
it came on slowly until no start. jumpers etc do not improve the situation. my feeling is that somehow the ignition is not being switched on but as the car can be push started the connrection to the ignition is diverted when the starter is activated. difficult problem but i bet the solution is simple!

A lot of the electrics on these are lifted from VW models.A poor voltage to the coil ,ignition system could be problems with ignition switch and/or fuse box multi-connections to rear of fuse panel. If I recall this is the same as a Golf that used to suffer with burnt/overheated pin connectors.hth
