Hi

Any diesel speacialists???

Got problems starting after being left overnight.Changed glow plugs and checked glow plug relay,no improvement. Now found that fuel is running back from fuel filter housing and once i manually prime the fuel system(using priming bulb)she starts instantly and is fine all day.Checked all connections for air leaks and can only see a small diesel leak and slight hissing on top of the bosch diesel pump by throttle arm.

Is this small leak enough to cause the fuel to run back?

If so can the seals on throttle arm be replaced with the pump in position or does the pump need to be completely removed?

Could there be any other reasons for the fuel to run back overnight?

Kind regards.

Could well be the primer pump itself that's leaking air, the diaphragms fail. If you have a leak on the pump that could cause it as could weeping leak off pipes on a Bosch system..

Hi

Thanks for your response. Was thinking of that aswell my old escort 1.8D had a problem with the primer. So i havnt ruled this out yet.Do you know away to test the priming unit on this?

Thanks again.

Only really by bypassing it, but then you can't prime it! If you can park the car on a really steep downward facing slope so that the tank is above the engine, wherever the leak is, it should leak diesel.

Just tried the hill technique no sign of any leaks except the very slight damp patch around the throttle. Now thinking that it could be a fault with the fuel pump inside the diesel tank .May be its faulty or the non return valve is stuck. Will investigate further.

Many thanks.

can anyone help with the answer to this problem.

I am experiencing the same problem of difficult cold start first thing( 2-3 mins cranking, to get it to fire)

Once started is fine all day

many thanks

Does it start any easier if left parked facing down hill? If not the chances are that its not an air leak, if you are sure that the glow plugs are working correctly, assuming that the starter is turning it over fast enough you must have low compression, either from bore wear or leaking valves. Try the effect of leaving the glow plugs on until you hear the relay drop out before starting, probably about 20-25 seconds, repeat if necessary.

consider the pipes that bleed the excess fuel back to the tank. I had probs with them that led to very long cranking times before fireing

Hi I have just spent 3 days going all through the poor starting with a friends 2001 1.9 Citroen Berlingo's front jacked up 50cm, to simulate an uphill overnight stay.Sure enough the first morning . the motor fired up briefly and then cut out . Just as reported .

After a bit of enthusiatic priming the motor sprang into life .Leading me to suspect the fuel filter priming pump one way valve .

With the diesel filter removed and the filter bowl drained the lid was replaced the leak down filter lid outlet sealed and both the inlet and outlet connected to clear plastic tubing .

The plan was to take the outlet tube from the top of the filter lid into a clear 5 litre water container.

Then with the larger clear plastic tube to the priming pump inlet connected to my garden hose pistol, The Priming pump was flushed with clean tap water whilst operating the priming plunger . The water collected in the 5litre water container was visually inspected . and then emptied through a filter skim fine mesh .

There was an amount of debri flushed out of the priming pump to support my theory that there was some leakage from the priming pump's one way valve.Which was causing the filter bowl to drain out sufficiently overnight to cause the cutting out after a brief seemingly normal start.

Now after one successful overnight start . Plus a second simulated uphill start, all of this with the fuel gauge showing zero and the fuel warning light glowing brightly.

I am hopeful that my friends distressing uphill starting problems have been laid to rest .

Don't forget to clean out all of the water prior to replacing the filter and refilling with diesel

i hope this helps .
