Tappet adjustment would be the most obvious place to start. These engines usually need it at every service, but it often gets ignored/forgotten. Not a difficult job. Replace the rocker cover gasket before you refit the cover (a cork item, and about £2 from most motor spares outlets).
Err on the side of looseness rather than tightness. Better to have a bit of noise than have the clearances too tight.
I have lost count of the number of these engines on which I've taken the rocker cover off, only to be greeted with solid black crud where there should be oil. Try the tappets first.
It is a mark of the basic toughness of these engines that they seem to soldier on, albeit noisily even after years of complete neglect.
