Renault Clio III - 2002 Renault Clio Starting Problems - StuartD77

My mum has a 2002 Clio 1.2 which has developed a starting problem.

Sometimes when you turn the key the lights all come on but the car does nothing else. Sometimes it starts to turn over but then it stops even though the key is still in the start position. It seems that the immobiliser light is on constantly at first but then goes off briefly when it stops turning over.

Also when it stops turning over there is a loud relay type clicking noise from towards the passenger side.

Seems like one for an auto electrician (I know a good one where I live but I'm at my folks 150 miles away) but any help to sort the problem would be most appreciated!

An old-fashioned idea but it's always worth cleaning the battery terminals with Vaseline before spending a lot of money. But in your case a loose connection seems likely, so you may need a professional unless you (or your mum!) are handy with electrics.

French electrics in general have a certain 'je ne sais quoi' about them,.

IVE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM ON A V REG CLIO AND A 54 PLATE CLIO,WHAT I DID WAS UNPLUGED THE WIREING HARNESS UNDER THE BONNET ON THE PASSENGERS SIDE UNDER THE FUSES (MINE WAS A WHITE PLUG) SPRAYED IT WHITH WD40 CLEANED THE INSIDE OF THE PLUG UP . HAD NO PROBLEMS SINCE.WORTH A TRY AND I COSTS NOTHING.

Hey all,

I have petrol 2002 clio and having starting probs, seems to only be issue in warmer weather - turn key wait for service light etc to go off, (fan seems to stop too, don't remember if this usual) then try to start, just turns over but doesnt start. Mostly if i give it a minute and try again its fine, if a bit lumpy when first driving when this prob occurs, but today it's not even starting at all. help please - car abandoned!

Dont know if this helps - usually when you turn keys and dash lights come on, stereo comes on too, but whilst having the starting issue today its not coming on - is this electrical issue with car maybe?

Could be the coolant temp sensor (CTS) this can play up on Clios and when it does so the ECU does not know whether the engine is hot or cold so does not adjust the mixture accordingly when starting.
