Volkswagen Bora - Reason for water temp gauge fluctuation? - the_bandit

Any suggestions for water temp change fluctuations?

Car is a 2000 2.0 Petrol BORA.

Under normal conditions water temp gauge is just below half way mark. Recently have noticed this not getting above a quarter. Today noticed that when heater was turned up to max and fan switched on that water temp gauge fell from normal position to lower quarter.

Car idles well, fuel economy as before and does not require top ups of coolant.

Did put VAG-COM on and got a message for intermittent engine coolant temp sensor.

Could it be as simple as replace this sensor ??

Yes,it could be that simple.Coolant temp sensor problems are a common issue on Vag models.Easy to change. They are usually have a blue or green plastic top with a 4-pin connector.Push fit into a hose with an o ring and a plastic circlip. If you go into measuring blocks on Vag com ,you should see the fluctuation in temp.hth

Has the 'stat ever been changed?

If it's still on the original, then that could be the reason.

Symptoms mirror those I had on my 2001 2.0 litre petrol A4. Changing the temp sensor solved it.
