White wall tyres - why not? - oilrag

Well, I guess we know some of the negatives - carbon black being better and so on. But just thinking about them brings a mental image of spats and Chicago gangsters - oh and perhaps a 60`s Triump Herald, or similar?

Why not though?

Hard to believe that a white tyre wall, or even a little band of white will never be seen on a car again.

I've still got one on mine, the date's frightening, but it's legal.

Judging by what I saw on Google images, white wall tyres must still be available somewhere because there are plenty of contemporary shots of classic cars wearing smart white-walls.

I never liked white-wall tyres when they were still to be seen on Ford Consuls, Triumph Vitesses and the like, but now that they're a rarity I think they look quite smart.

As soon as I spotted Oilrag's thread I thought Ford Consul, but was pipped to the post by Sofa Spud.

Back in the early 60's an older (and wealthier) colleague had a convertible 375 model with white wall tyres - it was stunning.

Proper white wall, or miserable little thin white circles?

As a youngster in the early 1960s I had a big collection of Dinky/Corgi cars which I meticiulously looked after.

It was possible to buy packets of stick-on white walls which you could add to your Dinky Ford Consul

That was the height of class

Does anyone remember the ABC Bakery vans in London, which had red-wall tyres. These were just ordinary tyres but with the sidewalls painted red.

In the early days of motoring, car tyres were mostly a creamy colour. That's one feature that seems to have disappeared even from the veteran and vintage scene. I know the old natural rubber tyres were much more puncture prone, but you'd have thought that specialist tyre makers would still supply cream-coloured tyres.

I once fitted a set of these flimsy rubber things they sat in the bead area of the tyre then when inflated was supposed to sit flush with the tyre wall.

Was on a mini 1275gt back then god they looked daft the owner loved them.!
