i replaced inner and outer cv joints on n/s after a knocking appeared. car was ok for 3 weeks and then knocking came back. it was so bad i had to be recovered. i removed the driveshalf and could not see anything wrong. put car back together and ok for around 3 weeks and knocking has come back. the knocking sounds like a cv joint knocking and is there all the time when road wheels are turning. can anyone help?

Did you replace it with a new cv joint?

yes, two new cv joints. outer from a co. in birmingham and inner from ebay (came in a ford box with finnis no. which i know doesn't mean a lot these days)

Can this noise be from the gearbox?

Without seeing car and driving it it's very hard to say have you had it inspected yet?

that's what i am hoping it is not bigtee. a mechanic had it for a week and said he couldn't find anything wrong, the next day it was knocking again. the box was reconditioned about 3 years ago and i have only done about 15k since. i would have thought that if it was the gearbox the noise would be there all the time. i am going to check the tightness of the bolts on the inner joint and if the knocking is still there will have to take it to an autobox specialist nearby to diagnose rather than spend another £250 on reconditioning a halfshaft.
