Hi,

The family are off to France first week of June, La Rochelle, and to break up the long drive each way we plan to take an extra day getting there and and another extra day getting back.

Going via calais, we are looking for a motel/hotel near Rouen and another motel/hotel about an hour's drive from calais for th return journey.

Ideally we are looking for a chain that has interconnecting rooms and can supply a cot as we'd rather not bring our own, our children are 3 and 7 months.

Help most appreciated,

a900ss

I've found Kyriad to be reasonable. Not sure about interconnecting rooms but they do have some rooms which will sleep 2 adults + 2 children. Not as basic as some of the other chains and hotels normally have a restaurant. Ideal for an overnight stay.

We've used campanile for the last few trips to and from the outlaws place in burgundy, we use them in preference to any other chain as they have free wifi at most and nearly all have a restaurant on site, which after a long days drive means you are not hunting for somewhere to eat!!!!

They don't actually have rooms for 4, the most they have is a room for 3 (I do know some of their rooms can be linked), but we found that a room for 3 was big enough to get a travel cot in. They can be really quite cheap if booked in advance. Don't expect luxury though!! They are clean and comfortable, and better then some of the other budget chains we have stayed in in France!!!

I was also impressed with their head office prior to our last trip, had trouble booking online, customer service agent (english speaking) was pretty dis-interested in my plight! So I dropped an email to their MD (got his email address from their head office) within 2 hours of the email their technical director was on the phone to me doing his best to apologise, in english that was better then my French, he then made sure the youth on their customer services desk who previously could not have cared less called me, apologised profusely and took our booking ;o) Was really impressed by this.

We will use them again without a doubt.

Myself, i always use ibis or Novotel. both part of the accor Group. also in the brand is Mercure and etap

iiRc, Novotel has connecting rooms at some hotels and kids under 16 stay free in connecting room. There is one near Rouen, "Novotel Rouen Sud" not far off autoroute.

accor is a strong brand with consistent quality, you know what you are going to get, i.e. white stucco walls, orange bedding etc no matter where you are.

i have never been to a duff one

a second vote for the accor chain from me. Novotels invariably have a double bed and a pull-out sofa bed, and can supply a cot for the little one too. a lot of the Novotels in France are a bit run-down but thankfully their prices usually reflect that (compared with UK prices). always have on-site restaurants and have always been child-friendly on my visits. www.accorhotels.com

agree, Novotel are pretty good, there is one near Lens just off the a1 and about 8 miles off the a26 which is about an hour south of calais we have this booked for our trip later in the year but it ay be too far east for your return. be aware prices vary widely across the chain depending almost anything, go online for the deals and you can get b&b for two for around £70.

When traveling with children, I third the vote for hotel chains...less of a surprise and reviews are readily available for your reference. Have a great trip!

campanile are oK, can be scruffy and stink of smoke (despite being non smoking now). are in the process of re-furbishing and those done are very good, but at the rate they are going it will take 80 years to do the lot.

There is an ibis in the centre of Rouen which is good and has a car park, walking distance from the centre. ibis Do have linking rooms.

about an hour from calais . . coming back we have started travelling the extra hour and stay in the ibis at coquelles, poor restaraunt in the hotel but all the food outlets in citie europe are open in the evening - even Sundays - and is only 2 minutes away - 5 minute walk. also means a relaxed start for an early ferry.

campanile and Kyriad are both the same group. campanile generally corridor less - Room door opens to outside (interesting when it is below freezing) but easier for carrying bags. No lift if you are on 1st or sometimes second floor.

Novotel are not what i would call budget - about 50% more than an ibis but rooms much bigger.

Put Kyriad into Google, on the search page ask for "all brands"it wills how you the campaniles as well.

bear in mind that "premier classe" and "formule 1" are the French budget brands, small rooms. bunks, shower only, unstaffed. Would not want to use one uless desperate.

bTW some ibis hotels oNLY have showers (e.g coquelles), campaniles have baths.

another vote for the accor group.

Used ibis hotels on a touring holdiay of brittany in 2003 - hotels are of consitent quality and there's a useful facility where you can book a room ahead in your next destination. i tend to use Novotels when travelling for work for the same reasons.

as a stopover, i'd prefer ibis (or possibly etap, though i've not tried them) to the very basic Formula 1s.

They also do a loyalty card which you an sign up for in advance on their website - worthwhile if you expect to stay with them frequently.

Would just add that all the chains have good and bad hotels. before booking i always check the hotel reviews for that particular hotel on the "tripadvisor" site. one poor review doesn't necessarily make for a bad hotel but if there are a whole string of them avoid and choose somewhere else!

Cheapest are Formule 1; Premiere class and similar chains. A very basic pre-fabricated box with plastic bathroom (some do not have private bathrooms). Beds are firm & comfortable though, and the cost is pretty minimal.

Logis de France will give you decent "home" cooking fairly reasonably, with much more charm than the above hotels, not much more expensively - a real taste of France.

Having watched the assembly of a hotel recently at Wolverhampton I can confirm that all the modern hotel chains build their new hotels from "boxes", just the more expensive ones have bigger boxes!

We've used F1 and Premiere many times and you get what you pay for, its often half the price of the others and, for us, thats more important... Premiere just has the edge in our view.

Hi guys,

I'm the OP and have just returned from my holiday in France. Stayed in an Accor hotel, Suitehotel. One in Rouen going out, another in Coquelles coming back. Totally recommend them for a family. We have two small children, one 3, the other a babe in arms. They supplied a family room including a cot and couldn't fault it (except breakfast but that's just France really). They also include free internet through your lap top or TV if you don't have a laptop, free unlimited movies on demand (about 40 to choose from including kids movies) and free music on-demand as well (about 100 albums to chose from).

For a stop over with kids, the movies and internet were great.

Thanks all.
