Volkswagen Jetta 1.4 TSI 122 SE - arnold clark/Motorpoint - Twincharged

Hello

I've just spotted arnold clark (and Motorpoint) are selling a large number of VW Jettas with the uber desirable 1.4 TSI 122 engine that is usually impossible to get hold of. all the cars are on 59-reg plates with less than 10k miles and under £12k. This is silly cheap for a car that has a retail price of £18k when new!

What concerns me firstly is the fact they have a large number of them all with similar miles and they don't look to be in perfect condition, is this a tell-tale sign they are ex-rental vehicles? They have a fairly 'suspect' sticker on the dashboard - http://i40.tinypic.com/349ez5s.jpg

Secondly, the spec is slightly wrong. The alloys are not what you would expect on an Se spec car, they are the 16" Toronto wheels from the S model, not the atlanta wheels the Se should have. The interior is even more confusing, it has an "aSR-Off" button rather than "eSP-Off" like you would get on a UK model, and although it has all the Se refinements like the comfort seats, armrest, chrome window surrounds and RcD310, its missing the leather steering wheel. This makes it sound like an import to me, what do you think? If it was an import, then theres not going to be much warranty left.

They struk me as a bit cheap as when ordering any VaG car with that TSI engine there are very long waiting times. This means nearly-new examples usually sell for close to full retail price, e.g. you wouldn't get much change out of £15k for a 59-reg Golf TSI 122 Se.

Would appreciate any comments on this as can't find much info on web.

You can browse arnold clark's selection here - http://www.arnoldclark.com/used-cars/volkswagen/jetta/options/fuel_type/petrol/age/1/orderby/price_up/ and Motorpoint here - http://bit.ly/bcSiWY

Wayside group also seem to have some in stock.

They list them as specifically not having the reliable VW eSP system, so definetely not UK-spec vehicles. £1500 premium over arnold clarks price.

It sounds as if they might be imports or ex-rental cars (or both). Sometimes these can be a good deal, but you're right to be careful.

We do ask you not to criticise specific dealers on the forum - hence the edit to your second post.

yes they look like ex rental cars (this is NOT a bad thing) and if they are not uk spec they can only be eire ex hire cars.

Yes I've seen nearly new eIRe imports for sale by arnold clark before, so i guess that would make sense.

Just seems a little odd that they are also been sold by a VW main dealer under the approved used scheme, when they are clearly imports.

Seems they have some 1.9 TDI diesel variants too, again exactly the same non-UK spec, same age, same miles, sell tell-tale signs its an ex-rental car.

Found some high res pics here - http://bit.ly/dm69KJ

all of them are either on KN (Northampton), Sa (Glasgow) or RO (Reading) numberplates...

are Wayside affiliated with arnold clark in any way? In the link above they are selling one of the Jettas with arnold clark written on the numberplate.

So far arnold clark, Motorpoint & Wayside... wonder if anyone else has them.

eDIT: They are from Thrifty car rental, Wayside forgot to remove the rear window sticker in one of their pictures.... http://www.supercar.co.uk/HighResImage.aspx?DefaultImage=wayside&Id=600872293&Uc=2&View=3

Probably an irish import - the spec in ireland is usually lower than UK due to the tax regime.

if your insurance company don't throw a wobbly on insuring an import and you intend keeping the car until it is virtually worthless these cars will be worth it. if you intend selling in a few years be prepared to take a hit when you try and get rid.

old arnold has certainly imported irish cars before - they were flogging Nissan tiidas (not a model officially sold in the UK - bit of a giveaway that!) not so long ago. i take it the "59" registrations reflect the original date of registration in ireland, and not when they were re-registered here?

edit: that's weird - the new forum software seems to be taking exception to some of my capital letters in this post....?

Yes there is a bug that affects some capital letters. So try not to start a sentence with abc or e.

Just checked with VW ireland, they are definetely not eiRe spec. an 'ireland Jetta' would have different style alloys, leather steering wheel and eSP, which these ones don't.

i'm also still intrigued as to why Wayside are selling them, when they are very clearly imported ex-rental cars, and have arnold clark stamped on the numberplate.

if a hire company need hundreds of cars they can get any spec they like - made to order in a batch - hence 6-12 months later there are a batch of non-standard cars for sale!!!

cheaper fabric, smaller wheels, narrower alloys,..................................

i bought a non-standard spec ex-hire Golf tDi 90 estate back in 2000. one of a batch that found their way to various dealers across the country. Still in daily service as the wife's gardening van. i can't see the problem with non standard spec - it came out of the same factory as the rest. if you like it and the price is right and you're going to keep it for a while then i can't see any problem. incidentally, my old tDi 90's only ever had a back box beyond the usual tyres and 2 cam belts. being a hire car in odd spec did it no harm.

Some time last year i saw ads in the national papers (telegraph iiRc) from Motorpoint offering year old 1.6 petrol Jetta Ses for 9699. Doesn't that make these 1.4s seem pricey?

the same ad also offered new Peugeot 407 Se petrols for under 9 grand...!

Volkwagen Jetta 1.4 tSi 122 Se - arnold clark/ Motorpoint - CGNorwich

Since you can buy this car brand new from DtD for £14,493, a year old ex rental import with 10,000 miles on the clock for £12,000 doesn't seem much of a bargain to me.

Volkwagen Jetta 1.4 tSi 122 Se - arnold clark/ Motorpoint - idle_chatterer

i guess that the 1.4tSi is much more sought after than the 1.6 (and for good reason in my experience) ?

these cars actually have a slightly higher spec in some respects than their UK equivalents e.g. front foglights. one could always put the proper UK wheels on and keep / sell the others for winter use ?

From the internal pictures the spec looks equivalent to the standard UK car - cruise (i think) and the same trim ?

the Jetta has much worse residuals than the hatch in the UK (for whatever reason), these cars are based on the MKV Golf (i know the platform is the same) and not the MK6 so perhaps have the supposed weaknesses (rattles, noise) of that car ? they're immediately dated too of course.

as someone else says, probably a good buy if you're going to keep it until it's a banger, a friend has one (1.9PD, gruff as anything) and they're very capacious / comfortable.

Just to add an ending to this thread, I got comfirmation from a dealer they are non-uk spec imported hire cars from eire.
