Why do I get prompted to change my password everytime I log in?

You should be asked to change it after the relaunch today. But once changed that's it.

So unlike the old Backroom are you saying there is not a mechanism in place to change my password again should I so wish.

No - he's saying that you don't have to. You can go to your profile and change it again if you want to.

Is there a way to make it remember the password when logging in?

I had to change my password the first time I came on to the new site.

I just changed it to 12345678 and then back to my old one straightaway.

why? you could have just changed it to the same thing.

Why? Because he assumed it would not let him set it to his old password immediately for security reasons. But at least the site made us change passwords after the downtime - a very good idea.

What annoys me are work related systems insisting you change password every 4-6 weeks and remembering a years worth. So my password ends up less secure than the very secure one I used to have. a word yes but spelt with some numbers and special characters instead of l3tt3r5.
