What is the difference between these two and which is better option while standing stationary in traffic?

Thats a lot of mucking around selecting "P" in traffic, nuetral + handbrake unless its EPB will do. One of my own autos does recommend "N" if in heavy traffic whilst stationary.
Selecting park secures the vehicle but questionalble if someone rear ended you in traffic! N for me in traffic & P when parked!

P = Park and the gearbox is locked up, i.e. it won't move. Use when parked.
N = neutral.
In stationary traffic I thought everyone put they foot on the break and left it in drive ;-)

I was once told not to leave the autobox in P for long periods of time with the engine running as you can overheat the oil, or something like that.

I searched on the web & downloaded an automatic manual (Kia Ceed to be precise).
There it clearly says to use N + handbrake in traffic - just what we do in manual.

If I'm going to be stopped for more than a few seconds I use N + handbrake in any vehicle regardless of transmission type. In my auto N is next up from D but P is all the way up t'other end and only gets used when I'm ready to... um.. P.

...and going into P usually flicks on the reversing lights while passing through R - can lead to momentary confusion//consternation for following motorists

Agree. P is for Park, ie stopped, engine off. In traffic, either use the foot bake and leave it in drive or put it in neutral and use either foot brake or hand brake.
There is a school of thought that claims that shifting between drive and Neutral puts wear and tear on solenoids that offsets the marginal savings of shifting to neutral.
