Hi all
Can anyone tel me if this is an easy job. I have only done this on a metro before and that was easy. I believe that the filter housing must be retained and only the internal part replaced. If anyone could give me a quick breakdown of the job and any special tools required i would be very greatfull.

I might have dreamed this, but I don't think Smarts have a drain plug - the oil has to be suctioned out.

Correct - you need an oil extractor as there is no drain plug.
Use oil to Mobil One specification.

Is that a bad design ?
I have seen these oil suction devices but the whole idea of an oil change is to remove any debris as well (since draining oil from the lowest point will remove any debris as well).

No, using a suction device is fine - especially if the car is designed for it.
If there's any debris in the sump, you have much bigger problems than worrying over whether to drain or suck the oil out!
For DIY use, a vacuum oil remover is excellent, as on many cars it allows an oil change and filter to be done without jacking the car up. This makes it more likely that the oil change will happen rather than being defferred until later. IMO, this is worth much more than Angels on pinhead type arguments about getting the last drop out. Incidentally, on may cars, the suction device removes more oil than draining via the plug!
