Hi,
I think I've found a replacement car which i should get in the next few doors from private seller.
I'll be putting my old car on ebay ,with no reserve so hopefully a sale in 10 days or so.
What is the best way of staying legal regarding insurance for the short period while I have 2 cars ?
Both cars are pretty cheap so I'm not too worried about the level of cover but do wish to stay the right side of the law.
Supposing I transfer my currrent policy which expires 23 March to the new car , will my current company offer short term cover for the old one , or do I need to try a specialist ?
Any suggestions gratefully received.

Depends on your insurer. When I was in the same position a few years ago with Direct Line, I just asked when changing it over and they gave me freebie cover for the old one for a month.
Ask them nicely and see what they say.
Other than that, keep it off the road or try Norwich Union (avaiva now?) who do short term policies.

HPI were doing a deal where you get a free 7 days driveaway insurance with every check. I did a check last Sunday and was able to phone Aviva who wanted to give me a quote, but have given me 7 days free cover via the HPI reference number.
Their sample report still has this on it, but I don't know if they're still doing it.
I actually SAVED money just by doing the HPI check.
Alternitively I would contact your insurer who may be able to give you free cover for a week or so.
More than will cover me for 7 days free of charge, then extend that by 7 days at a time up to a max of 21 days. However I would be charged an admin fee each week after the initial week.

DL were good for me on this too, and allowed me to drive both vehicles for a short period. I assumed it was because I was the only driver and could only drive one at a time and I was paying for the more expensive car, but not really sure. They called it something but dammed if I can remember. Conversations with others on the call centre hadn't identified this facility so might depend on who you get!
Best of luck.

Zurich gave me a free month.

thanks for the replies.
My insurance company insure.co.uk gave me cover, but not a freebie.
I paid £63 for 28 days , cheapest option was £26 for 7 days.
I could have probably found something cheaper but instant cover was the way to go on a busy day.
At least the car change on my insurance wasn't too bad , £37 to change from a Focus to a Mondeo.
Oh and first impressions of Mondeo are favourable and the Focus got through its MOT without costing a fortune, just a replacement brake pipe and track rod end.
