Saw some pics recently, the DT on Sat IIRC.

Seen an undisguised F10 up close, it's very nice. Smoother and, I guess, blander than the E60. Looks longer and lower too, though don't know whether that's just down to the styling.

Nice! Makes the new E Class look like a garden shed after a hurricane!

A common opinion of BMW in the mid-1990s was that they only made one car, it just came in three different sizes. Seems like they're heading back that way at least with their mainstream saloons!
It doesn't have the "wow" factor that the current shape 5-series had when it was introduced, IMO.

Underwhelmed.
If they could conjure up a real replacement for the E39 that wiped the floor with almost everything else for looks when it was released and still looks good today, neat and handsome.
Good job they've kept the kidneyish grills, without those it could be anything...disappointing.

the swiss tony. I personally object to your personal attack on the looks of the new E Class Mercedes Benz. A silly ignorant remark. In dark burgundy with light beige interior, or black with light beige interior it looks extremely nice. As I have always said, it has understated elegance.
The best looking car by far is the Jaguar XF. Time will tell how good the car really is.
I have a great deal of respect towards the BMW 5 series. I know people screamed that they wanted no more Bangle. I personally miss Bangle's genuine flair towards the design of the 5 series. It may have been a bit too arty and overdone for many people's tastes; but I found it a very refreshing design, particularly in the back. The new one almost looks like a bigger 3 series in the back. I was never mad about the back of the latest 3 series. I have read , that the interior quality of the new 5 series is a step up in quality. Naturally it will prove to be a truly great car I have absolutely no doubt. I always greatly respect BMW 5 series cars.

'personal attack'? naw, that is just MY opinion on the replacement to a (still) good looking car.
IMO the W212 looks like it was designed by a committee, the rear arches being a personal hatred of mine - many of the swage lines just seem to have been put on for no good reason, and not matching with other styling cues.
and as for the headlamps, they would look so much better as one piece glasses.
as for your liking of the light beige with black or dark burgundy, I do agree - BUT with the right choice of trimming, eg some of the wood clashes very badly!

Hm. Bit o' Jag, with a whiff of Almera, and a hint of Vectra about the rear end?
|
Had the thumbs up from CAR - gone careful with this version as the E60 was too forward looking for the conservatives I guess - The E60 has evolved into a very pretty looking motor now. Probably because everything else around it has gone ugly to the same degree. Fantastic driver's car by any standard.

If you liked the Bangle designs, you won't like this more conservative look. Personally I thought Bangle tried to be too clever, and to me this one is a big improvement.
|
Great minds thinking alike there at the same time PU!
The important thing surely is that a BMW looks like nothing else. The Jaguar XF sounds like a great car, but side-on there are echoes of Vauxhall Insignia.
|
Nicer than the e60, still not as good looking as the e39 though :-(
|
Side and rear of the F10 not unlike the current Citroen C5. Same roofline and door glass shape, very similar strong flute at door handle height that cuts through the filler flap, same treatment of wheel arch flare.... similar feel to rear end with boot lip, number plate recess shape and smaller lights in boot.
Thankfully the central front grille area is quite different so they will not be mistaken for each other.

In fairness Citroen have shamelessly ripped off BMW design values all the way through to a cheeky Hoffmeister kink !
|
I have no idea of the design lead times for cars but you might assume Citroen had a poster on the wall of an E.90 3-series and thought something similar but a bit larger would do.
The Citroen C5 designer is of course ex-Audi and was involved with the A6 so he'd already tried the roofline.
Funnily enough I stopped at the village shop shortly after getting the C5 such that the car mad owner could see the whole C5 side through the window apart from the front 2ft (not a plan, just happened). He said "Got a new Audi then".
Anyway Citroen seem to have met the ambition portrayed in their ads for the C5.... except for selling loads!

I would have thought given the wonderful example of cossetting, innovative, "make you feel special" sumptuousness that is the Jag XF's interior (my boss has one, it is quite simply stunning inside), they'd have at least done something with the interior. It still reminds me of a cheap 1980's games console, much like the current 3 and 5 interiors do.
Exterior is inoffensive but bland.
Nothing I see in those pics stops me wanting an XF.
|
There's a strong possibility that an F10 will be my next car, I hope they convert the wipers to RHD this time though (unlike the previous two 5 Series and 7 Series generations).
I'd love an XF but the BIK is eyewatering.

Agree completely, Avant. I really like the look of the new 5 series, both inside and out. Slightly understated, but elegant.
I don't know what Planet Bangle was on, but this guy's opinion of him made me laugh:

Despite the longer wheelbase the rear seat still looks like it is designed for only 2, with the wheelarches still intruding. That rules it out for me, needing a 3-seat rear.
The rest of the interior is nice, the exterior is neat. Not sure if that's good or bad!
|
It's a bit dull. The E60 looks great, still. I doubt they had me in mind at their focus groups

IMO the new F10 looks very appealing in this view:

It does, doesn't it! In that particular view I think a Bangle creation would look over-fussy.
