During peak hours, 90% of cars on road are just occupied by driver alone.

Why manufacturers are not bringing out one seater cars? It should cost pennies to run and should be environmentally friendly as well :)

Hope you don't suggest using motorcycles - a car is a car, even if it has just one seat.

Surprisingly, 2-seater cars usually cost more than family cars! Why? They need less materials to build.

Didn't the Meschersmit three wheelers have one seat, they were around in the 60's I think. May be wrong on three counts here including the spelling of the car. If I remember they had a huge door on the front and the steering wheel was attached to it......looked downright dangerous to me.

I wanted these to take off,

I haven't heard anything else about them for a while now. Does anyone know what happened to them? If they had been mass produced and subsequently made cheap enough, it would have added a lot of excitement to the roads!

Most people can only afford one car. The car that you see with one person in it in the rush hour, may have taken the kids to school that morning or may be taking mates to the pub later. It may even be calling in at the supermarket on the way home.

My scooter has 2 seats, but I never take pillion, but once in a while I have passengers in my car.

Messerschmitt had a rear gunner seat, naturlich.

They might become a reality when plugin electric vehicles come along.

With the inefficiencies of the combustion engine gone, every extra gram of weight has a measurable reduction in range!

Adding more seats costs very little in the grand scheme of things, so a single seater car would be about the same price but less useful. The cost of the materials of the car are a relatively small proportion, and larger cars tend to be more expensive as they are better equipped and have better engines and transmissions. not the extra metal, glass and carpet.

The Messerschmitt was a two seater.

Those with a front door and cantilevered steering column were Isetta (BMW), Heinkel and Trojan (Heinkels basically). Note the connection with German aircraft manufacturers but not Japanese (whose suicide pilots may have had a lower attrition rate than drivers of above machines). ;>)

I remember that donkeys years ago Frank Costin designed one and built a prototype.
Years later I met Frank a couple of times and he told the storey. He tried to get backing to put it into production and the people who wre to provide the money wanted to employ a stylist to make it look pretty. The stylist was duely employed and he did make it look pretty but there was no room for the drivers head.

I've seen lots of one seater cars I'd like to own and drive, but they are out of my budget. Could you get a Formula Vee through an MoT, perhaps?

i think the Mclaren F1 only had one seat :)
Why no one seater car? - Dynamic Dave
The Mclaren had 3 seats. The driver sat in the middle, with space for a passenger either side.

I wonder why Smart was designed to sit side by side rather than back to back.

The later would have increased the length but with reduced width.
