Does anyone have any information on the failure of Renault's automatic gearbox. I have been told it is a problem Renault know about but have difficulty in getting anyone to admit it.

Ring your friendly local auto-box specialist, who probably knows his way around the innards of these, for first-hand info.
The weakness, as I understood it, (Renault 21 auto) was that the hydraulic valves which control the gear changes, contain a piston which has a rubber/neoprene outer skin cast around a metal core. The rubber is liable to separate from the metal, leading to "flaring" and gearbox failure. The cost of removal and repair is usually more than the car's worth.
This experience has converted me from a Renault enthusiast to a Renault-phobic. As you sow, so shalt thou reap Monsieur Renault.

I SAW YOUR REQUEST FOR INFORMATION ABOUT RENAULT AUTO GEARBOX PROBLEMS. DID YOU GET ANY. MY GEARBOX HAS BROKEN DOWN AFTER ONLY 36 500 MILES AND I AM TRYING TO GET RENAULT TO HELP WITH THE £1850 COSTS.
ANY HELP WOULD BE APPRICIATED
