My dads Golf GT TDI 115 (RHD import from Holland , new in May 2001) has been in for its 30,000 service and the (main) dealer is reporting that there are problems with both the ABS & the traction control (ESR - presume it is something different over here?). He will find out exactly what the problems are today, but does anyone know of any specific faults with this car and the ABS/ESR? HJ mentions a recall of Golf/Bora due to faulty ABS ECU - but doesn't say when these cars were made.
Anyone?

"problems with both the ABS & the traction control (ESR - presume it is something different over here?)".
UK switch on dash is "ESP" Electronic Stability Program.
I suspect the dealer's VAG 1552 Diagnostic kit has picked some fault codes concerning ABS/ESP.
The system relies heavily on wheel speed sensors fitted to all 4 wheels. Its worth checking these out for any visible damage, especially the cables to them.

IIRC there was a recall on a number of VAG cars including Golfs, Leons and Octavias for a fault in this area, which included cars manufactured up to about November last year. Yours may have been missed due to being an import.

Update: The news from the main dealer is two fold. These diagnostics "apparently" come from the diagnostics machine
1. The ABS Pump has some form of fault
2. The sensor for the traction control has some damage
Now, said garage also want my father to leave the car so they can have a look at it, BUT they also want him to agree to pay for any work that needs carrying out, and they said this could run to £900-£1500 [There may be a chance of VW contributing because the car is only 18mths old, but it is an import]. So the 2-3hrs they spend looking at will also be charged at £50-odd per hour. Being from Yorkshire, he told them no chance. I suggested an independent specialist, either a VW spec. or ABS spec. But if anyone can give me some ideas what the problem might be??
In my opinion after 18mths the ABS pump shouldn't fail on a car that has had mainly motorway miles, given that it has been driven sensibly (I only did 1000 miles in it....?
Any assistance greatly appreciated.....

Your warrantee is only valid in a VW agents. Did you register the car with VW when it was imported and did it recieve the 3 Year warrantee.

The warranty was only one year - It would have cost a few hundred quid to extend it and generally they aren't worth it (except in this case!)
But the car was registered with VW when it was imported.
If the car is run with this problem, does it just mean that ABS/ESR won't function, or will it cause some other problems with the braking system?
