I thought that it would be a good idea to change the oil today but unfortunately I can't find where the filter is located. Can anyone help?

Its not a spin on type, its an element type. Take of the engine cover and you should see it there at the front of the engine.

Make sure you have the large 14 sided socket needed to unscrew the oil filter cap and a torque wrench to put it back with. The tightening torque is moulded onto the cap. (25 Nm from memory).

A 1.9 PD engine needs specific engine oil - absolutely essential.

Use Mann & Hummel filters and replace the two "O" rings in the filter assembly (provided with a new element). Make sure the lower ring goes on the correct groove of the central stick. It's possible to get it wrong.

Only VAG can turn what should be a routine job into a special operation. This is why bodging is rife and these cars suffer needless unreliability later in life when they are mis-handled due to their stupid detail design.

Many thanks, I spent ages looking for the filter. I will sort it out tomorrow with the correct oil and filter already obtained from the VW Agent by reference to the VIN number. With reference to the VAG built in problems, the 3 screws/bolts holding the under engine shield at the rear were a pig to get out. Is there anything I can do to make them easier to extract next time.

WD-40 or silicone grease, etc.

Hi my old golf is a 1.9 tdi 98 plate. I used comma semi synth diesel for my oil changes. I changed the oil and filter every 10k. The car has covered 255000 miles. sailed through its last MOT on emissions. I just used a strap wrench to take the filter top off. I dont bother with the torque as once the top is seated its just a tweek thats required. Ive done about 20 oil changes.
the only extras i have done is that I flush the engine every 40k and slick 50.
If the nuts for the cover are a bother to put on then just dab a little grease (butter will do) on the socket it will hold the nut in the socket whilst you line it up on the thread.
I now have a TDI 05 plate. I am going to look at the spec for why their oil has to be used as I am sure other oil manufacturers can sell the same spec oil for cheaper.
Lastly the only reason I am scrapping my old golf (still 6 moths MOT on it) the running gear at the back will need changing in the future starting to whine. it isnt worth the hassle of selling as lots of minor faults such as had to be locked from passenger side.

You will need to use an oil with the spec of 507.00. This will be a full synthetic 5W-30. These oils are quite expensive from all the oil companies, but if you don't use the correct stuff things can get even more expensive. I use Castrol Edge 5W-30 which states that it is for modern VWs and Audis.

You will also find that the oil filter is inside a can type thing, just like it used to be on my first car a Mini in 1965.

I hope you like your new Golf, my wife has one and has not complained about it yet! Except she liked the heated front screen on her last Focus.

Big Stilsons or a mole grip are also effective at removing this damned cap.
