My brother is considering getting a car after about 8 years. Obviously he has 0 NCD but he drives a van for work.
He has tried the comparison websites but they come up with high prices. My only suggestion was that a local insurance broker might be more help, might treat him the same as an ex company car driver?
Any other ideas on this?

You can get a letter from work, so I understand, saying that you have driven their vehicles for X number of years without incident. Some insurance companies will accept this and offer a NCB as a result.
Yes, you're right, you would probably do better in his case dealing through an insurance broker.

If it's say 6 yrs driving put that into the information on the web page and see the price, it then gives you a contact number to ring to set up you DON'T have to do it on the web then you can speak to a human and explain the situation and give them the letter take a copy for yourself. see how you get on
By explaining over the phone you have told them all the information is correct on the recorded telephone line.

When we gave up the Motabiity car I found myself in a similar situation. I did as jc2 suggested and went to the insurance company used by Motabiity, who gave me a NCD. This was accepted the following year by another company.

I assume that he is a clean risk... No accidents/claims/convictions in last 5 years (you don;t say in OP).
If so, like previous posters have stated, get on the phone and speak to people as generous introductory discounts are available for good risks.

I was in the same situation a year ago. I used Confused.com as there is an option for company car driving history. The insurance company required a letter from my old employer but this enabled me to have 7 years no claims, which brought the policy price down considerably.

Thanks for all the replies, I will pass on your help.
He should be a good risk, no claims at work, no convictions etc.

When I first went with DirectLine after many years of company car driving I had to procude a letter saying that I had no claims in xx years and ALSO that I no longer had a company car i.e. the NCD moved from one to another as normal.
However, introductory bonus's can have a similar effect.
