When I turn the key nothing happens apart from a click. Its a 1.6 petrol and has hardly been driven over the past week but started OK yesterday. Could it be the battery, alternator or starter motor?

The car headlights, wipers and interior lights work

But do they dim right down when trying to start the car?

I think i would start (!) at the battery terminals.Does your car have those unreliable wind-down battery terminal clamps?hth
|
I have not tried starting the car with lights on.
"unreliable wind-down battery terminal clamps?hth" - I don't know

I have not tried starting the car with lights on.
The reason I asked is that the starter motor requires a lot more power from the battery than the lights do.

Turned out to be the battery. It now starts fine, cost £50 inc fitting. Garage had initially fitted a new battery for whatever reason was discharged.
But I'm thinking what if my battery was actually fine but the alternator is not chraging it properly so in a few days/weeks time I could end up with the same problem. If that happens can I be certain the alternator is faulty?
