Taking the mickey or what!
preview.tinyurl.com/36points (link to local paper).
An international singer who gained 36 points on her licence in six months withdrew her appeal to overturn her driving ban after a judge threatened to increase it.
Folk singer Edwina Hayes, 36, was banned from driving for 12 months after committing eight driving offences.
The printed paper has details of the offences that are missing in the web page. (found in comments).
Miss Hayes admitted driving at 68mph in a 60mph zone in Market Weighton on February 7; failing to give information about a driver's identity in Lincolnshire on February 25; driving at 68mph in a 60mph zone on the A1079 at Dunswell on March 22; driving at 69mph in a 60mph zone on the A1079 on April 29; and driving at 45mph in a 30mph zone in Wiltshire on July 4.

I find it fairly hard to get worked up about 68 in a 60, save that a bright yellow box on a pole is pretty easy to spot and it indicates a certain 'flakey' attitude to driving.
I'd be more sympathetic, but 45 in a 30 and failing to give info about a driver's identity are both reasonably serious.
I think there's a strong argument the latter should not be, right to silence and all that, but it seems she had got off fairly lightly.
|
She is doing well, averaging 4.5 points per offence, thats well above the norm.
Some of the comments on that newspaper site are quite witty.
|
Getting caught that many times in only six months is frightening, she obviously doesn't learn (or doesn't want to learn) should be off the road for while so she can cool down a bit and reflect, and made to take another test before she is allowed to drive again.
|
I think she should get credit for her persistance atleast :-)
|
She clearly does a lot of driving but one photo on her website shows, for no apparent reason, the speedo of a car doing nearly 90mph. tinyurl.com/yharqsl
I think she should be taking her driving a bit more seriously.
|
What kind of car could it be, with a speedometer that only goes up to 100mph? Probably a van.

It would appear I'm not as observant as I could have been! I can't remember the last car I had with only 100 on the clock.
Maybe another photo quiz for ted?
|
Judging by the typeface of the speeo, id plump for an 80's Vauxhall, either a Nova or an Astra maybe.
|
Evidently still going strong after a fair mileage...
|
On her website there is a picture of her standing in front of a C-Reg camper van. If she got up to 69mph in that, then I'm impressed (unless it was downhill...)

Luck plays a big part in whether you are caught or not. Drivers with similar habits can have completely different experiences of gaining points. If you travel regularly on a road with specs then you'd have no idea until up to a fortnight later that you had been caught. A couple of transgressions and bingo, license gone. We all know people that speed everywhere that don't get caught, those that hardly speed at all but always get caught when they do and those that are careful about not speeding ever and still get caught out.
What's important is what her accident record is like. If it is clear then the speeding isn't dangerous. 45 in a 30 isn't necessarily dangerous either as there are many urban dual carriageways that have 30s, nsl roads that have been dropped to 30s and we all know the vans hide in straight bits when a higher limit is imminent to pick off the unwary.
It wouldn't do her any harm to do some advanced driving sessions though. If she is doing a high mileage then basic probability suggests that even if she is pretty careful there is a high possibility of being caught just down to exposure to the road system.
|
I don't know the roads at all but 60 often suggests a country lane or a busy dual carraige way. If she was doing 68 then the speedo was probably reading upto 73-75 on what could be far too fast. Many 60 roads you cannot safely drive at 60.
Just sounds like she is blind and dosn't notice what is around her. She should always make sure I am in front of her, no danger of going over the limit then :p

Nothing to boast about Rattle.
I have a vision of a line of furious white vans and BMWs waddling down a single carriageway fast open NSL road at a miserable 45, led by a smart blue Corsa with - what's this? - a man, apparently young, apparently in possession of normal senses and physical abilities, dozing complacently at the wheel.
Shape up for heaven's sake and stop being vainglorious about your systematic mimsing. I'd rather be driven by that folk-singing lady than by you, the way it sounds.
|
Nothing is more enjoyable than annoying a smug *** in a BMW :).
The limit is 30, I will stick to it. Sometimes I may stray over to 32/33 but only if a Gatso is a trillion miles away!
Its not like I am doing 25mph and a load of people are beeping away behind me, I am doing 30 in a 30 on a very busy city road if the BMW drivers want to crash or get points let them.
Lud if there is a nice straight 60 single lane road then I will do 60, I do keep up with the traffic providing I don't go over the speed limit. Doing 45mph on such a road would be dangerious and I hate them as much as you.
O often got up to 60 and 70 when I was in Wales despite it being police state central. Or lets trap the English.

60 and 70 when I was in Wales
On single carriageways? Above the limit? Shome mishtake shurely?
:o}
|
Still amazes me how many folk only realize how important their driving licence is to them when they arrive in court.
|
Lud nope dual carraige way, a lot of the A55 is 70 :).

You go for it Rattle, there is nothing sweeter than knowing your holding up a BMW - its a public service really, protection of everyone elses back bumper :-)
Problem with SOME drivers is that they will tailgate an/or overtake no matter how fast you drive.
I was overtaken today while doing a steady true 65 on a NSL road by a MK1 Discovery diesel - he struggle to pass what with those things having no real performance and in the end I had to slow to 55 just to the twerp could pull in and avoid the oncoming lorry.
I then proceeded to be stuck behind him for 5 miles while he chugged up the hills. These people are best off ignored in the wider world as their brains are located in the same spot as their egos.
|
Now then! What's all this BMW-bashing about?
We all know that the folks who used to drive BMWs aggressively have moved to Audis. :-)
BMW drivers these days are sweet and reasonable and have re-discovered their indicators.
What do I drive? Well, err............now that you ask....err.......
|
>>BMW drivers these days are sweet and reasonable and have re-discovered their indicators.<<
I think they are secretly car-sharing with Audi drivers to lull us mere mortals into a false sense of security :-)
|

Maybe another photo quiz?
1990s Nissan Micra, methinks. All the more reason to keep her off the roads, I wouldn't fancy her chances of taking evasive action on skinny tyres and 119k mile suspension at 68mph.
The comments are pretty good too. My local rag (same style of website) moderates comments far more harshly.
