Twice over the past couple of days when I've started the car it has only just about idled below normal level, & has refused to accelerate. The first time I discovered the dipstick had been pushed up out of position. The second time this hadn't happened. On both occasions the car did eventually start as normal. Would this be a piston ring problem? Or something simple in the ECU? Or something else? Thanks..

Given that the last 2 mornings have been the first cold ones of the season, I would suspect the battery is below par. Does it sound like it's labouring when cranking? Mine struggled to idle when cold when the battery was knackered - and it was noticeable slower cranking when cold vs hot. New battery now, and cranking speed is high all the time, and idles no problems.

Don't think it's the battery - turns over no problem. It's been grand since so hoping it may just have been an ECU glitch or something. Both times turned over fine but didn't have enough pressure to idle properly. The first time the dipstick had pushed up which I'm told may be a sign of wearing piston rings but there's been no smoke or anything. Will just have to keep an eye on it for the time being. Cheers.

Dipstick coming out of tube can be caused by the engine top cover not being properly secured. Check the support posts.
No idea why it wouldn't accelerate. Have you had the fault codes read? That might be the next best thing to do as guessing doesn't often work with these engines.

A couple of the clips for the engine cover are missing so it could be that...
Due a service in a couple of weeks - provided it continues to behave I'll leave it till then but def get the fault codes read just in case.
