Does your car rattle/squeak? - Jcoventry
Don't know if a thread like this has been posted here before, but here it goes.

Name your car, make/model, year, and number of miles its done. Let us know if it rattles or not - this could be dashboard/trim rattles or more serious stuff like mechanical/suspension noises.

Ford Ka 1.3 Style Climate 2008, no rattles. 6,030 miles.

Front centre arm rest/storage compartment rattles a bit when it's cold. Nothing apart from that.

Ford Mondeo LX 2.0 TDCi 115, 2005/55, 106,000ish miles.
Does your car rattle/squeak? - lucklesspedestrian
Toyota Camry (1997) 146K miles.

bit of a knock from the rear sway bar 'D' bushes over dodgy roads at low speed (don't really notice it now) otherwise very quiet.

On the other hand SWMBO's 2005 Focus II (47K) does seem to have a few cabin squeaks and rattles but thankfully the road noise seems to drown that out!

Jag S Type 3.0 SE 1999 (70K): front suspension minor clunking sound (similar to supermarket trolley rattle) when driving over undulating surfaces, but only does it when cold i.e. o/s temp is below say 5 degrees C. Coldish weather, it will do it for 2 - 3 miles, then stops. Warm or hot weather it doesn't do it at all. Front suspension bushes have been changed in the past (15K miles ago) and 2 mechanics have stated they definitely don't need changing again. Front ball joints changed in the past and still have grease in them. Nothing else worn or loose. No idea what does it, it annoys me, but i'll have to live with it.

Jag X Type 2.0 D SE estate 2005 (50K): rear metal dog guard. I now live with it. Approx 4 times over 5 years, loud clonk from O/S/F suspension, (similar to axle tramp thread) e.g. if you pull out of a junction very quickly and spin a wheel on a wet road. Has once done it during sudden emergency braking. Had it checked the first time it did it, nothing untoward found. Very infrequent as we don't usually drive it like that, so now ignore it.

Westpig - I'm rather surprised about your Jags having those problems, especially the 2005 one since these are not cheap cars.

I started this thread because my 2008 Ka *did* have some noises, but those have since been fixed. And I had to use blu tack under the dashboard to solve a rattle on the passenger side. But now its fine.

With interior trim, stuff like the dashboard, its usually a case of metal touching metal, or plastic touching plastic, which vibrate against each other when the chassis of the car flexes. The other problem that others have mentioned is when dashboard plastics expand because of heat. Sometimes its just a case of tightening things up, sometimes its a case of being a bit more inventive, using blu tack, foam, tape or silicone grease.

I agree with what someone else said - most cars do rattle. But the point is - they shouldn't. If it was designed properly and assembled properly at the factory, it shouldn't rattle. Manufacturers are *meant* to take a newly built car out on a bumpy cobble road to test for any noises. Whether or not they bother doing this with cheaper cars, I don't know.

Nothing annoys me more than noises in a car. For me it really ruins the driving experience. I don't mind noises you expect like engine noise, road noise, wind noise and "drumming" when going over rough road surfaces, bumps, etc. But noises in the cockpit tick me off!

The S Type is now 10 years old, so you have to have a line drawn somewhere. As it happens though, got it back from my mechanic yesterday having had the electric mirrors fixed.. and.. touch wood no light rattling this morning and temp was only 5 degrees C...tomorrow morning will be the decider as it blooming parky tonight. He's gone through everything suspension wise, haven taken it a bit personally, tightening up things that didn't seem like they needed tightening etc.. so touch wood.

The X Type has an after market type Jag approved metal dog guard fitted, as an alternative to the load space cover..it rattles at times. The more modern ones have a newer type of load space cover that has something made of a string type mesh material that will pull out of the load cover and fix on the roof in the holes designed for the dog guard, so you've got a form of dog guard that will prevent most pooches from getting through..and the load space cover..but if you have the dog from hell you could still use the metal type one. The newer one can be purchased, but I wasn't inclined on coughing up £180... plus the metal one has an extra attachment that will split the boot space 50/50 or 30/70 which is very handy.

I'd agree a suspension clonk isn't brilliant...but happening less than once a year...i've shrugged my shoulders...maybe I shouldn't have.

Those red elastic bands the postman drop are good for rattles. chop a section out and with a small srewdriver ease between rattley bits. Also......
Interior rear veiw mirror.
Rear dampers...took 18 months to find that one.
Dash to surround. That red band secton.
Windscreen wipers. Good quality replacements.
Ask for opinions from passengers as to where the rattles are comming from. You wont believe it!
Springs broken that tension the H/B cables.
Particularly single pot front disc pads. Copper grease.
Override on 5th gear. Change gear oil.
Go for quality interiors for peace of mind.
WHAT CAN RATTLE WILL RATTLE.

Course it does. Clonks as well.

They all do. It's just that some of them do it quietly.

I blame the Walkman and its successors for giving people the idea that cars are quiet these days.

It isn't that the cars are quiet. It's that the people are deaf.
Does your car rattle/squeak? - Rattle
Mines very quiet since I tightened up the screws which holds the door card shelf in place and electric window switches.

No rattles at all now unless I have loose luggage. It did have a horrible rattle from the front which turned out to be slightly snapped front springs, new springs cured that. It did also have a knock at the rear which turned out to be the back box banging onto the chasis, new exhaust rubber solved that.

The engine is a little tappety but I am used to that now, and my new exhaust is some what noisy (made a thread some months ago about that). The chain rattles a little bit for the first 30 seconds or so when started from cold.

My dads Fiesta on the other hand makes all the clonking noises in the world, the bushes seem to go every 15k and the wishbones often fail. However his engine is very quiet for a pushrod Kent engine.

The main issue with my car is that noisy back box.

Corsa 83k - best bit is the suspension is as quiet as any new car, no clonks etc, but then I have had to put four new springs and two new rear shock absorbers on it in the past 9 months!

It only rattles when:

1. The parcel shelf is out.
2. My sons lacrosse kit is in (long shaft midi, if anyone is interested)
3. When I forget to put the lighter back in its socket after using the sat nav.

ie: all self inflicted, really

Mondeo III at 112,000mls.

Suspension, running gear, body, dash as tight as the day it was made. However the drivers seat and nearside rear seat both have just developed small annoying chirrups from the springs underneath. So far I've been too lazy to go upside down in the footwells to apply a bit of grease.

2009 Skoda Fabia 1.2 - 4,000km - no squeaks or rattles yet

2002 FIAT Marea Weekend - 265,000km - slight rattle from drooping interior light fitting, goes away when thumped back into place. Can't be bothered to carry out a more permanent fix. Other faults on car:

* Fault: Water temperature gauge reads HOT. Cure: Thump dashboard to return gauge to dead centre.
* Fault: EGR sometimes sticks. Cure: Thump with rubber mallet to free up soot.
* Fault: AUTO setting on climate control sometimes doesn't work. Cure: Thump rotary switch.
* Fault: CD player sometimes fails to read disk (Err displayed). Cure: Thump CD player.

The observant amongst you may notice a pattern emerging.

Had an irritating buzz from the driver's door trim, fixed by tightening some of the fitting screws, which were barely tight.

Mazda 6, 2006 (early), 32k miles. The only rattle is from one of the isofix child seats, when empty, at tickover. Otherwise, nowt. Oh, apart from squeaky tailgate arms, but that's not really what the OP is looking for. WD40 cures it for about a week. Then they squeak again.

apart from squeaky tailgate arms...

Mazda6 - 2002. Squeaky tailgate arms, despite having both replaced under warranty. WD40 keeps them quiet for a few months though.

Thankfully, no rattles.

Does your car rattle/squeak? - Alanovich
My 6 is still under an aftermarket warranty. No doubt if I look at the policy there will be a specific exemption against replacing squeaky tailgate arms, including those which stop the boot when it's halfway open and refuse to lift it further without manual intervention.

If I had an ounce of optimist in me, I'd have a look. But I'm not going to waste my time and increase my blood pressure.

Altea is really sneaky with her tailgate struts. Sometimes, when its cold, she will not open up to the full extent. It looks like she has but she hasnt, and will strike you on the head with her lock piece if you place your head inside.

Volvo S80 09 plate.

Rattle from seat belts banging against b pillar trim both sides - fixed by dealer
Still have small noise from nearside seatbelt moving about over rough surfaces (but not banging against trim)
Buzzing/squeaking noises from passenger door from new which dealer has fixed
Various buzzing/squeaking noises from drivers door which started about 3 months into ownership - dealer has tried to fix and has made noises quieter and intermittant rather than more or less constant

Discussions on volvoforums.org.uk show that mine is not an isolated case. Fortunately I have the S80 rather than V70 or I would have to content with the various noises that eminate from the tailgate.

Not what you'd expect from a £26k car.

Maybe its worth taking up the remaining issues with Volvo head office? Definitely doesn't sound good for a 09 plate!

08 Aygo, 21k, rattles like a bag of bolts.

Interesting thread - as every car I've ever owned has rattled, squeaked and buzzed like a milk float on heat I just assumed that's what cars do. Haven't bothered to take Aygo back under warranty but now I see lots of people expect not to have extraneous noises perhaps I will now.
Does your car rattle/squeak? - Altea Ego
you guys have no idea what rattles and squeaks are.

I owned one of the First Maestros off the production line. The dashboard was designed as plastic mechano. It consisted of lots of little panels and sub assemblies, all held together with miriad plastic rivets.

before you drove off, the mere effect of climbing in the car, and the resultant body flex would start the plastic groaning in pain. The dashboard made more nosie than the engine or wheels in motion.

After about 20k miles, a dust of ground grey plastic started to weep from the seams and joins of the dashboard, where it was literally wearing itself out with the movement.

2000/X Xantia 2.0 Hdi Estate 112k. Radio cover has resonated at some speeds since new, cured by "nudging". More occasional rattle from o/s rear footwell traced to pulsing fuel return line contacting floor panel. Cured with insertion of small roll of card.

2005/05 Berlingo 1.9D. Various characterful rattles. Dog guard is main culprit but there's "something" behind the dash as well.
Does your car rattle/squeak? - Jcoventry
I would definitely be complaining about that. Toyotas are supposed to be these reliable tough cars, but I see little evidence of it on the models they've brought out lately. My old shape Ford Ka 08 plate has no rattles, so neither should your 08 Aygo!

A new Maxi that I bought in 1980 was a serial rattler and squeaker. However, I managed to resolve most with stiff pieces of cardboard, and an excellent, but rather expensive, silicon aerosol spray that was then available at Halfords.

That's almost as amusing as the stories where people found drink bottles left over by factory workers that were stuck behind the door cards causing a rattle. Don't know if its true or not, but I'm leaning towards a "yes"!
Does your car rattle/squeak? - Glaikit Wee Scunner {P}
I'd a 2 year old Maxi around 1979. A comfortable car but problematical. The attractive dash panel looked like a plank of wood and chirruped like a cage of budgerigars. The solution was to undo all the screws and insert packing made from closed cell foam. However the next fault in the infinite series came along very soon.

If I can mention my following Mk 2 Marina without shuddering, the doors used to chirrup in their apertures. A smear of silicone grease quietened that. Unfortunately then got some on my clothing. The squeak of money being extracted from my wallet for repairs was the usually loudest sound....
