Took delivery of new Focus Estate on Tuesday. V5 on doormat this morning (Friday)! Cant grumble with that.

Think I may wait somewhat longer for refund on VEL from old car.

Another thing I also discovered was that some dealers can issue VELs for new cars rather than having to go off to the nearest LVLO. Now I know why I have seen some VELs with 'Dealer' stamped on them. Learn something every day.

The DVLA is pretty efficient these days. You can order a replacement licence on a Friday at (due to loss) and get it Tuesday. Step-son had this level of service. But I had a tour a few years ago and was impressed. Even spent time in the call centre.

Any organisation depends on the competence of its employees and the DVLA will be no different.

i havent been on the tour...

Joe public was never invited :-)

One reason to go on it was out of interest. The other to visit south Wales (and therefore parents) and get the cost covered. And I night out in Swansea too.

My recent experience of the DVLA has been good.

Reg doc for the CC3 arrived in a few days as did the road fund licence refund from my previous car.

They even sent a letter giving the date my previous car ceased to be my responsibility.

I took delivery of a new Auris one morning in October, and found an envelope from DVLA containing the V5 when I got home that afternoon

when they get it right its good!

I have a local DVLA office close by (preston) , you should see the police ANPR cars around there , doing people for no tax!

anyway , a bike I own , its a "enfield" , not a royal enfield , the bike (1990) was mfg in india , enfield india did not get permission to use the "royal" till the early 2000s,

sent the v5 off , came back as a royal enfield!

removed the cherished plate and sold it , they sent my v5 to the new owner of the plate!

changed the engine from a 350 to a 500 , and offered to pay the difference , (£11) , v5 arrived back 6 weeks later , as the origional 350!!! but taxable as a 500cc

I hand delivered the origional request to there office, along with a recept for the engine (inc previous bike details and a recept for fitting the engine)

went back to the dvla office and they rung thru , admitted that they had not looked at the "evidence"

lot of waisted time , and effort , but sorted eventually

Had dealings with DVLA Cardiff after my Fathers death and I have to say they were polite efficient and an all round pleasure to deal with.

Felt like asking then to take over HMRC.

Think I may wait somewhat longer for refund on VEL from old car.

Absolutely crucial bit of documentation to look out for is the acknowledgement on change of owner of your previous vehicle. Think it should come with 4 wks and if not, then it's up to you to notice and remember to chase it up.

I haven't come across a dealer, even small rural ones, for many years who couldn't do that. I thought they all could?

When I worked for a Renault dealer we used to collect a sheet of new numbers from the local DVLA office.

We took 25 at a time, they were each in the form of a small sticker which was stuck on the first registration form, which also contained the car's and first keeper's details.

All done online when I bought the CC3 earlier this year.

Ordered my tax disc on a Sunday night at about 1:00am, it came in the post 9:00am on the Tuesday. Was very very impressed. It saved a lot of hassle looking for insurance certs and my MOT certificate.
