valve stem seals worn or gone hard. these engines do have a high rate of oil consumption but even worse when seals worn.
When I did the stem seals on my SRI140 oil consumption dropped from 1lt per 1000 miles to 1 ltr in6-7000 miles.
the cat will mask the fact that you are burning oil until the cat clogs up!

I did my seals without removing head by using compressed air in the cylinder & removing the cams & tappets & using a special spring compressor designed for doing valve stem seals in situ. very fiddly & back breaking. Not a job for a novice!
Otherwise its a head off job. the seals must be fitted precisely because if they are pressed too far they open up & it defeats the object! if they are not on far enough they get hammered by the collar!
Thirsty motor for london.

vauxhall allow 1L/1000 miles so only just over, not to bad for a 13 year old motor, normal way to tell if valve stems is let it tickover when normal temp has been reached for about 3 mins then give it a big bootfull while looking behind you if a puff of smoke then most likely a stem seal problem ,it may help you short term to get some seal reviver available from most decent retailers (its not snake oil i have had good results with it) regards TB

I would comment:
13 year old car.
Under 90k miles.
Used in London.

Good chance the piston rings are partially seized due to fuel and oil deposits never burned off from long runs.

I would try an injector cleaner for diesels and run on Shell V Power diesel for 2-3 months to try to clean out engine. And a few 40-50 mile runs on motorways at 70 mph.

May make no difference but worth trying.

Any particular seal reviver you'd recommend TB? I have a horrible feeling the seals on SWMBO's Z18XE Zafira with 125K on the clock are on the way out and I'd rather not have to throw big money at it at this point in time.

hi there, i have a vectra b x16xel that i just put new head gasket, 16 new valves and new stem seals due to slipped cam belt, i started it and it runs fine for 10-15 mins but as it warms up starts to smoke slightly, then if i leave it ticking over it starts to missfire, at this point if i drive it down the roads it puts out a road full of smoke and smells like oil burning kinda smoke that lingers for ages, this slowly clears after 5-10 mins of hard driving or if i rev it hard and stay still then the same shed loads of smoke and after 5-10 mins revving clears up and missffire goes until ticking over 10 mins or so and comes back. i read somewhere that when installing stem seals you cant push them on too far or they open up or not enough n they get hit, well i hammered each one on quite hard, how am i supposed to know how hard or far to put them on and do you think this could be my problem, also how can i prove this, what if i run it till it misfires n remove plugs or something could i tell??

what is wet / dry compression testing, dry i assume is normal compression test what is wet?? and would this prove it was stem seals or rings?? or other?

many thanks
