when i drive my punto i get a swooshing noise coming from the passenger side,i thought it might be the water pump but theres no sqeeuking. theres no water leaks, the car is running fantastic with no running probems at all. when i say swooshing its like if you put water in a bottle and tilt it to the left and right(the water moves left and right). could there be a airlock somewere. ive turned the little black screw on the engine to let pressure out but none is coming out just water. im a bit puzzled, does anybody have the same problem that could enlighten me please..

make sure radiator level is correct
ive had a few puntos do this noise and a top up has always cured them

I think it is air in the heater matrix. My daughter's 52 1.2 8v suffers from this and no amount of bleeding from the rad valve or the heater hose valve changes anything.
The problem seems worse from cold and gradually disappears as the engine warms up, I'd like to think that the traped air eventually gets back to the filling point on the rad.
I believe that air is somehow drawn into the system (maybe through a dodgy headgasket - these cars are weak there) when the engine cools after use. So there is a bubble at the top of the engine and the first place it goes after starting is through the heater matrix. Her car uses a small amount of cooling fluid but I've not yet found a leak and the water pump has been changed recently (for a Fiat part - the aftermarket part supplied as part of a reputable manufacturers cambelt kit screeched terribly after less than 12000 miles, also the belt was not a good fit on the teeth profiles - but I digress). I haven't changed the rad filler cap.
I'd be glad to hear of any answers you may find....
Good luck!

percy if it is air the way i cure mk2 puntos is fill to the normal max level in the radiator bleed till all air out the bleed nipple then drive quite quick forwards with the radiator cap off
a few times then replace cap

Bell boy thanks for the tip. Next time I am allowed to see the car for servicing purposes I'll try it out.

gurgling in a Punto is most likely an early indication of a failed head gasket.

The cooling system is meant to be sealed. Bubbles shouldn't suddenly be there.
991.2 Strange water noises - bell boy
who said bubbles?
the question was gurgling
how many head gaskets have you done on puntos then?
i ask because ive changed more thermostats than headgaskets on this engine in all its guises

why the discussion about carefully topping up and bleeding if not air/bubbles?
how many head gaskets have you done on puntos then?

On a Punto, none. FIRE engines in other FIAT cars, only three.

Obviously your day to day trade experience exceeds my car knowledge by several orders of magnitude.

So, perhaps I'm wasting the little bit of my time I spend here.

My Mk2 Punto 1.2 ELX has done 68,000m and I'm on my 3rd head gasket!! Failed at 40k, 55k and now 68k. Yes it is used for short runs so it goes about 2 years before head gasket failure. Each time head is skimmed and new gasket fitted. Guess I'll have to change coolant and oil every year to stop this happening - Surely there's a design fault here ??

By the time you get the gurgling noise - from my experience the head gasket is about to take a bath !! Cost of repair at independant garage approx £600

F.I.A.T = fix it again Tony - Still it is a cheap car to buy and I quite like the Italian styling

4 things
1/ check your water level as i explained above
2/find a competent garage
3/most important ask the garage to replace the thermostat seeing as the head had cooked
4/tell garage to follow my procedure for displacing air in heater matrix,
sorry that another john h took offence and i do apologise
