See the HJ news to the right. ( still haven't mastered those tiny "owl" thingies ! )
Mondeo with half a million miles makes £825. There's hope for "Betsy" yet !
Serious point underlying though, I've noticed 2nd hand car prices really strengthening of late. It was of course predicted but it may actually have become a pendulum effect by comparison with this time last year.
There's a Jag estate on a forecourt near here and I swear the sticker price has gone up a grand this week.

Thought you'd be along to sing Mondy's praises Hump.
Not surprised used car prices are strong, there's getting to be a severe shortage.
Went to an airfield compound today for the first time in probably 8/10 months...when i last went there the place was stuffed with used vehicles many thousands, today almost empty several hundred, this is the case at most of the ones i visit.
I suppose the manufacturers got caught with their smalls down by the downturn and learned quickly what to do...stop making cars in such huge volumes.
I wonder if we've seen the end of cheap used cars, and what will the next (worse?) stage in downturn see happen to used cars.

And what would a 500,000 mile Passat or Vectra make?
A loud rattling sound, lots of smoke, and very little else. :)
Seriously, I reckon it could only happen to a Ford.
|
Anyone remember the Ford 100k club - not so long ago it was special when a car got to that mileage.
|
Have a look at the Volvo high mileage club....top car has 3 million miles on it! Bloke called Irv Gordon who of course lives in the USA. The story is worth Googling.

Well, I've just given SWMBO the good news. She's been using the Mondy recently and does about 10-12k a year. Reckon she could get another 30 years out of it......
;-)

...Reckon she could get another 30 years out of it...
But the more pertinent question is will you get another 30 years out of SWMBO?

>>But the more pertinent question is will you get another 30 years out of SWMBO?>>
Humph Backbridge might not last sufficiently long enough to find out...:-)

Yeah, I expect so, her sister's no looker.....

Not Midget material then ?

Nonsense, my friend Uber'ed his 2015 Passat 1.6 TDI to 250,000 miles with only routine maintenance. A Mk5 Mondeo would be on it's way to a 3rd flywheel by then, and probably 4th set of driveshafts. You can add wheel bearings too in all likelihood, they're junk. And those PSA diesels are cxxp

I'm sure that ifithelps will be itching to respond to that after 13 years and 3 months... ;-)

Wow - thread comes back to life after 13 years ..... :-) Some sort of record ?

Often a prelude to spam but not in this case.

What was the Mondeo used for,my calculation make it around 10,000 mile a month, every month without any downtime.
|
|
Only 393,390 more than mine.
Perhaps the most amazing thing is that it has averaged over 100,000 miles a year for 5 years.
That is 280 miles a day, 365 days a year for over 5 years!
|
Looks like he got lost....a lot.
|
I got in a Vectra taxi a few months back. It was a T reg MK1. It had done 263,000 miles and I commented its done very well, the taxi driver then said its not his car it belongs to the taxi company they have owned it for years and in total have corrected the milleage by at least 100,000 miles. He reckons the true milleage was more like 400,000.
If that is true it seems very dodgy for a taxi company to be clocking cars, I assume its for insurance purposes as there is not going to be any value in a T reg Vectra anyway.
|
It's done for tax reasons, a driver in Manchester told me that by winding 20K or so off his car each year he was able to get away with paying less tax, if HMRC doubted his figures all they had to do was check out the mileage on his car apparently...
I can't remember the mileage on it, it was a Passat but I think it was over 200,000 indicated with about 100,000 chopped off on top. Still drove ok, but the dash warning lights were lit up like a xmas tree!
|
I'll remember that when I'm next in the back of a cab there - wen the driver starts bleating about spending cuts.
|
|
Dodgy bulbs.
|
I managed to average 100,000 miles a year driving my own minicab on half-cab/half-courier work. Most of the company's cars were double shifted, never got cold and covered up to 120k miles annually.
A mega-high mileage car is a rarity though, out of 10 W/X/Y reg Octavias we had only one passed 500,000 miles. Accidents were usually the limiting factor, almost all of them were still viable mechanically when the bodywork had suffered ditch/tree-induced terminality.
|
Yes I suppose it must have been doing some kind of ferrying work. I used to work for a very large company whose business required its staff to travel internationally quite a lot. They had two drivers each with a car. The two cars spent a great deal of time doing airport runs of 200+ mile round trips. The drivers sometimes, exceptionally, did that three times in a day but twice was fairly normal apparently.

That's terrible for the second hand market.

... have corrected the mileage by at least 100,000 miles.
Hmmm, that's an interesting use of the word 'corrected'. Not what it meant in my schooldays.

The Audi sport group recently bought a 500k Audi B7 1.9tdi and were surprised to find how well it had coped with the miles. Little rust original exhaust etc and valued at £1k.
But my work colleague landed a temporary job in Miami , only problem he was living in Vancouver. So he bought a Toyota Camry for $1000 which coped effortlessly with the journey both ways.

Maybe folks will hang on to old faithful for longer than before. My old girl has 175k is 14 years old I'm hanging as people have rightly pointed out used cars are quite pricey now.
