Hi Folks, I have a 53 plate 1.6 focus with 35K miles. Occasionally when i am driving the speedo and rev counter drop to zero and the trip meter and mileage just show dashes. The engine management light comes on. Besides that the car run's fine. anybody know how to fix this annoying Fault!!

This is usually caused by a faulty road speed sensor.It is situated at the rear of the gearbox,low down ,near the driveshafts.hth

This has been discussed here quite a lot over the years.

I replaced my vehicle speed sensor a couple of years ago and it cured similar symptoms.
Fiddly but only about £25 for the part.

I would check all the connections on the back of the panel & the earth wires for the dash.VSS sensor a pig to change if its corroded in box. If VSS faulty it wouldn't create dashes in the mileage. It sounds like wiring or dash panel fault
I would check alternator voltage output as sometimes these go well over & the dash shuts down for protection.
You would need to check batt cgarge voltage when dash goes off or have an ECM read to see if fault code for over voltage has been recorded

Yes it does - I witnessed it many times on my old Focus, when my VSS was failing intermitently.
Speedo dropping to zero was the first sign of problems, followed occasionally by the odometer reading -/---/---. The correct reading would normally resume, once the speedo started working again.
jaypen - if you read the thread linked to above, my symptoms matched your's exactly and changing the VSS solved the problem for me.

...but I'd also check your local Ford dealer.
IIRC, my 1999 1.8i petrol Focus had the one in the link above (for the B5/IB5 gearbox). Just make sure you get the right one for your car, as there are two types that I've heard about. The other type (for the MTX75 gearbox) is more expensive, apparently. Your Ford dealer should be able to tell you which one you need if you give them your reg.
Incidently - I obviously can't guarantee that it'll solve your problem. All I can say is that changing the VSS solved an identical problem for me.
I'd actually put off fixing the problem for many months, but it eventually started leading to a total loss of power - so no power steering or power-assisted brakes. Luckily, I was just about able to get the car off the road and stop safely, but it prompted me to get it sorted soon after !

Hi, Folks
I have recently taken my car to the local Garage for a diagnostic test as the dials have been erratic and the engine mangermant goes on and off, i asked the garage to fit a new speed senor (VSS) as suggested on my last post, The Problem seems to be fixed but it still showing this Error code on the diagnostic test do anybody know where the fault is with this Error code? as the garage diden't know?
Error Code is:
U1262 SCP bus inactive for more than 5 s. or Headlamp Aim Output Relay MEM.

I really need your help what to do?
I have a 53 plate 1.6 focus with 35K miles. when i first start the car up the battery, abs, pas, lights stays on for a while then goes out also the speedo temperature and rev counter drop to zero and the trip meter and mileage just show dashes. The engine management light comes on and recently the abs light has been coming on and going off, ive already taken the car to my local garage where they couldent find any fault than the one listed in my last post, they also changed the vss sensor as well with no luck not sure what to do next please help!!
{some merging taken place, as this appears to be related to previous questions asked by the OP, and it also saves me having to edit the vague subject header of his latest question - which tells people nothing about what the problem is}

i would be checking earths at the back of the dash and anywhere else i could find them
kick panels too perhaps
did a fault code read show nothing then at your local garage?

U0162 Lost Communication With Navigation Display Module
is the nearest i can find but we know that anyway

This fault code refers to a network problem within the instrument pod.Possibly a faulty instrument cluster.Your car is about the right year for this fault to occur.hth

I have seen numerous Focus models (both petrol and diesel) with erratic operation of the dials and warning lights ,all built in 02 and 03,and have either repaired the pcb to the dash or replaced it.I think you will find this problem well documented and Ford main dealers were offering a replacement unit for £99.However ,it is difficult to say this is definitely the problem with yor car ,but I am judging the fault on past experience.hth
