i need help please? what it the normal temperature for a cooling fan to switch on, on an 1998 1.6 8v vauxhall astra? mine switches on at 100, is this normal, also my normal running temp is about 94-95 degrees but if i sit in traffic for 2 or 3 mins it quickly rises to 100 i dont know if this is normal for these cars.

Sounds about right, a presurised cooling system will not boil until well over 100C

Yes, sounds about right. Theoretically it should sit at approx 90 deg c and kick in somewhere around 95 to 100 deg c, but the gauge is only an indicator, not 100% accurate. I suspect it's slightly over-reading.

thanks for your advice, do you think maybe i should replace the cooling fan switch and the temperature sensor just as a precaution? also where is the temperature sender/sensor located on this car? i found a light blue sensor around the back of the engine but not sure if this is it or not, cant really see anything else resembling it anywhere else.

andy i used to have a astra a 94 model 1.4 when i bought it i was alarmed at the temp guage reading, it used to jump to the red and settle down 3/4 up, my neighbour who used to have a cavalier said that its normal, the normal reading is 94-97 degrees, and if it went over dont worry as the fan kicks in, so i wouldnt worry about your astra, so long if the fan is kicking in i wouldnt bother.

good possibility you will wreck the radiator by changing the switch as it sits in a metal clip in the plastic housing
as said switch doing its job ,your gauge is analogue like an old Akai 4000DB ,unlike a grundig tk25 that only had a magic eye
