96 1.8D Sump plug - pullgees
While doing an oil change I lost the nylon sump plug washer. Put the plug back without the washer, no leaks at the moment. How important is this?

What, you think they put it there for a laugh do you......go buy another they are only 30p

It wouldn't ask if it wasn't for the fact of having to drain the oil again. It may be possible to replace the plug while the oil is running out but messy. Washers are not always critical.

If it is like other Fords of the similar vintage then it is recommended that the washer is replaced at oil change.

The washer cannot be purchased on its own - only with the plug.

30p becomes at least £3.30.

Buy a new plug WITH washer-unscrew the old one till it's on the point of coming out.You should then be able to exchange the two losing only a little oil.

funny thing is whenever you rush to change a leaky plug over, or to take out some overfilled oil, it always goes wrong and you end up with armfulls of oil :-(

But that's exactly what the MK1 human forefinger is for......special tool to allow sump plugs to be changed over.

I can't believe what the other poster said.....can't buy just the washer, what a rip off.

I've bought washers on their own-Ford dealer-it's only Halfords and accessory shops who sell them in a combined pack.

...sump plug changing....

Obvious, but make sure the engine is cold.

I've dropped many a plug into the waste while draining oil from a hot engine.

>I've dropped many a plug into the waste while draining oil from a hot engine.<

That's exactly what happened to me but only realized when emptying the bowl.
I've tried quickly swapping over plugs before and it's not easy squaring up the plug and get the thread to catch when there is the pressure of oil coming out against it, you usually get a load of oil running up your sleeve. I've half a mind to keep an eye on it and check with a spanner now and again. It is a diesel so it's only 6000 miles before the next change.

I tend to agree with you

I cannot agree with this comment.

Well to expand on my earlier comments.
I have just checked my records
From a Ford dealer spares dept who I trust implicity having dealt directly with the owner for over 30 years

For a 99 2.0l Ford Focus Mk1.
20 Oct 03 - Sump plug (washer not available on its own) £3.88

I do not have a current price for the sump plug including washer.

I have always understood that it is recommended to change the sump plug washer when doing an oil change. so in this case it is a new sump plug.

Any reason to get a pump for the dipstick hole ?
